Cities XL - City building MMO

Signed up for this a little bit back with a mate, haven't received any emails back yet tho :(

looks promising though and will probably give it a blast when its released even if i dont trial it in Beta.

Looks like this could be the first MMO which is appealing to me. I love the idea of building up things if it be in a RTS or something like roller coaster tycoon. MMOs at the moment cover such dull ideas which do not interest me.

Am looking forward to September when this comes out!

Looks like sims 2 bumped into sim city 3 and they charge u $15 a month for it !?

not sure about this one..... Im a big fan of Fantasy MMOs but ones liek this just completely freak me out, people living in cities playing an mmo where u live in a city... Pointless.

I believe its a pure city builder, no sims type crap in there apart from the way, I think, that every person living in your city has a job type and a home. This just adds to the city building side of the game, he/she will travel to work every day with every other person living in your city so you have to plan roads/motorways and zone houses and commercial areas properly.

No Sims business at all, multiplayer is basicly singleplayer but you can trade and compete with other citys on the same 'planet' as yours. You can walk around other players citys controling your mayor but its nowhere near sims gameplay. Doesnt seem worth the monthly fee to me but if they keep the new content flowing then it will be, if your subbed you get it free. And rightly so.

Of course I could be wrong, Ive not been reading up on all the details for this game, if you can point me somewhere where it saysthe game has elements of a Sims game I'll stand corrected :).

Never even heard of this but it sounds intresting. I think it'd be one of those games that only grabs my attention for a few weeks though compared to other MMO's (Eve Online I have played since March 2004).

Where are you getting that from? It's 7 Euro's a month, or 4.5 Euro's a month if you sign for 6 months???

Forgetting that, I'll be getting it for the offline game. Look very good from what I've seen so far.

I registered my interest in the beta a while back with no reply as of yet... but I'm looking forward to giving it a go :)

yeah i played an early release version and was decidedly unimpressed. clunky interface, confusing menus and some weird road placement just turned me right off it.

I played the beta, it was addictive and a little figity placing roads, the menu's did not sit right on screen and when you had some menu open other would not appear right. its a while since I played it and could not work out how to sell my manufactured goods. I wasted three cities as they went bust and the beta would not alow me start any new ones:( All in all it looked good and showed promise, if they sort out the menues and the road placement and trading then it would worth paying subs for.

Why have they released it before they've finished basic features like the transport system :/

Gets worse, the bus system isn't even going to be the next in the next update, have to wait until the 3rd update.

I think this has real potential to become much greater than sim city.

Is availible for £29.99 on steam, I don't think I will jump in just yet but if it had full transportation features such as full rail building with signals and a host of locos I would snap it up.

I was in the beta of this and put in many hours.

It's horribly linear and prior to realease, was still pretty bug ridden particualrly the trading which is a key part of the game.

I won't be buying it and the features they have limited to Planet Offer (and subsequent subscription costs) mean it's doomed to fail IMO.

It looks like SC4 fans will be waiting even longer for a modern replacement. Very sad.

I have this game. I have SC4 too but I'm not a massive fanatic about city builders, I just play them casually but this game felt like a waste of money for me.

Pros:
- Improved graphics over games like SC4
- Probably other things but I'm quite disappointed - see below!
Cons:
- Lack of depth - e.g. unlike SC4, you just have to place a single hospital for a whole city, you can't increase/lower the funding for the hospital
- This game Is missing many of it's features as advertised: building ski resorts, building public transport services (buses/trains) and buying blueprints to build super structures.
- It says you get free content updates every month (so long as you are paying the monthly subscription for the planets mode - mmo bit) but the larger updates (the features mentioned above) you will have to buy separately - however they do give 33% off these if you are on the subscription.
- It is generally quite easy (compared to SC4) - you don't have to worry about keeping people happy - just make sure they have a job and they'll be fine (most of the time)
- The player interaction online involves a single global chat box and resource trading. the trading system is a little poor as anyone can, and will cancel contracts at any time so the only reliable person to trade with is the bot... and you can trade with the bot in single player mode (there are disadvantages e.g. can only trade 5 units at a time but generally it's better for the reliability).
- There is quite a bit of advertising in-game: on the roadsides there are billboards with adverts on, one of the cars is a ford fiesta (the only non generic car), these aren't a problem really but the worst - kodak shops (that you can specifically build as a special building) will minimise the game and go to kodak's website when you click on them!
- There appears to be a memory leak of some sort: when you have a large city, the game will start to slow down until eventually it will be too slow to play - at which point you can restart the game and it will run smoothly again for a while (this isn't just my PC - this has done the same and even crashed some of my mates PCs).
- The limited edition isn't worth it. You get an in-game t-shirt (for your avatar that can walk around your own/other peoples cities - pointless) and a few extra levels in single player mode. You are supposed to get 2 megastructures too but that part of the game hasn't been released yet!!
