Need some citrix guru advice re xenapp 5 running on xenserver using provisioning server :D

got a dual quad core blade with 32gb of ram and 300 users at present - im thinking 3 vm's each with 8gb of ram and 12gb page files streamed with provisioning server?

we use ESX for the rest of our infrastructure but seeming xenserver offers big performance benefits running xenapp? :)

Last time i used a VM with PS4.0 is was noticeably slower than a physical machine. It was even noticeably slower than a 4 year old box about to be decommissioned. (was on ESX though)

I didn't build it though so i don't much about how it will be configured but citrix will be the last servers that i ever virtualise as you still want to eek out every last % of performance imho.

most of my knowledge is MF1.8 and 32bit but i would split into 2 core 4gb Ram 4gb Pagefile machines with a dedicated VM for master server / load balancing.

I like to keep my servers below 50 users.

Teledude what exactly are you trying to do?

You want to have 3 Vms each running Xenapp and how many users are you looking to support? Do you have 1 blade thats running xenapp and 300 users already?

I currently have a badly designed PS 4.5 farm running about 10 servers and 300 users.

Starting from scratch I have one blade and whatever software I need to make it run :D

I need to be able to support 300 users with ease and upto 500 in the future as well.

The benefits of provisioning server for server reconfig would be handy too...

Im thinking that maybe a half height blade with 8 cores is not going to be ok or will it?

it may be vms but its still 1 box. If I had physical machines of 2 duals or 2 quads with 8Gb of ram each I'd run at about 60 or so max users per box. Your also put all you eggs in 1 blade shaped basket.

Im not concerned about the eggs in one basket stuff - I trust the technology and we have SAN to SAN mirroring throughout the UK so ample DR in place :)

Has anyone specifically used XenApp 5 64bit under 2008 yet before I start a POC test? :)

it could bite you on the backside though. If it goes down the first thing someone will ask is why you didn't split it. Just saying you "trust the technology" is a fast track to a p45.

I would make sure you get management support, esp if you are top of the technical tree -edit sorry for the pants advice i am sure you have already sorted all these issues

I'm sure if the POC is good I can wangle another blade for HA and stuff but thats the last of my worries at the moment :D

All the figures seem to add up so without anyone using it I guess its down to me trying it :)

well it is only a few weeks old and as I say I'd not be daft enough to put all of my users through 1 physical server.
