I used to absolutely love City of Heroes. After a bit of chat in another thread I did some searching and managed to find my old guild! From there I discovered Paragon Chat. I can't believe I missed this.

OK so it's not a playable instance but it's good enough to recreate your favourite toons and to have a bit of a nostalgic wander around. It's a very odd feeling exploring with no hostile mobs anywhere. Pocket D and Atlas Park have some other players to reminisce with which is nice. I've already spent far too many hours in there.

Who knows if any of the 4 or 5 "spiritual successor" projects will capture the same spirit but I'd really like to play CoH again as it was, never mind a remake. It's aged very well with the graphics update. None of the current "alternatives" look like they'd do it for me.

Anyways, here's my main. Human Flea / Union. Science/SR/Claws Scrapper.

RIP, buddy. :( :( :(

Thought I'd share this in case anyone else missed it and fancied a look around for old time's sake.

U kno the crap that made me really annoyed was after they pulled the plug on asheron'call 2 (my go to game) 1 months notice. back in like 2004, they never told me they relaunched it so i lost out on that

I didnt know asheron's call 2 relaunched, i would have loved/played that stuff to death.
oh well old is old i guess

All that is noting compared to earth and beyond tho, cut my teeth on that game:(

also a picture Dickbutt.

Loved this game and played for a very long time. Right from European beta through to when it went F2P but I'd more or less stopped playing regularly before it died. It really was showing it's age when it got shuttered and I still hate NCSoft with a passion and won't play or buy anything they create or publish. My username here was actually my Global name and one of my main characters from the first few weeks of the Euro launch. Defiant forever!

I LOVED the way your character's costume didn't change as you levelled up. There was no stupid repair or degradation costs like in WoW and the game was very pretty at times. I must have had about 25 level 50's spread across Heroes and Villains. Most of them female I must add.

I can't find any pictures of my characters any more which doesn't surprise me really. This is the fourth PC in line since I last played I think.

Holy crap I found one! Misschief herself, Mutation Empathy/Energy blast Defender.

Oh man I remember this game, but not that I used to play it. This game was out before I had joined the master race and I used to read up stuff and look at gameplay pictures of it constantly - dreaming of playing it haha.

Miss the game a lot, never forgave the developer/publisher for pulling the game in the manner they did.

Weirdly it got a massive graphic upgrade literally days before they killed it as well.

Absolutely loved this game. Sunk so much time and money into it. I had many many level 50 characters. Always played on the US servers as I joined when that was all you could pick. Things went a bit south with the addition of the mission architect it just became a power levelling fest. Loved hanging around atlas park dishing out free inf and shiny stuff - as my own personal super group base was absolutely stuffed with loot. Makes me sad all my stuff got deleted.

...

I remember you, I think we were in the same guild and possibly teamed on a few occasions (my main account global was Highguard, can't remember the 2nd account global (which actually makes me a bit sad)).
Made a lot of friends in that game and have been lucky enough to stay in contact with a few of them.

I too had many lvl50s, in the 25-ish region too I think (over 2 accounts). I was mostly Defiant but did start playing on Union too as I ran out of space on Defiant.

Think I remember some from on here had atleast one character in foxbase alpha/omega supergroup - I stuck a couple of chars including my main level 50 in to help new players.

A US friend dragged me reluctantly into the beta as it didn't sound like a game for me at all and then spent many many hours playing it lol. Miss my main L50 as it had loads of the badge collection things for the little 5% perks and "grandfathered" ability to run perma hasten after they stopped that being a thing.

EDIT: One thing I never really got used to - can't remember if it was the original beta or just after but the game flow used to go through Perez Park naturally and it worked quite well - then they introduced The Hollows (which to be fair had some great content) but it meant Perez got bypassed (in level progression) by most players and it was hard to get people who'd do some of the content there.

EDIT2: Looks like my backed up install is nearly upto date so I don't have to download all the .pigg files.

The Hollows were great. I remember first setting foot in there! :)

I played from Beta up until about 2 years before it closed. I'd always meant to go back to it properly but life got in the way and it was only recently I felt the urge only to find it had gone for good. I do miss those epic runs, staying up until silly o'clock. What was the mission with all the ice where you could slide around, Frostfire?

What really made the game for me was the amazing, friendly community. I can honestly say nothing negative sticks in my mind as far as the community went. I know I wasn't the only one that enjoyed being a "hero's hero". ;) I've tried a few other MMOs but they were either rubbish in comparison or just didn't scratch the itch (EQ2, AC2, LOTRO, WoW).

I did look into Champions Online but it doesn't seem right, plus the "pay if you want to have any fun" model stinks. The "spiritual successors" have all promised a lot but I'll be surprised if any deliver. Valiance looks the most promising so far but they don't have the same funding as CoT has. I'd be happy if someone managed to get the rights and put some i23 servers back online in all honesty.

I was in LLOD on Union but played in a hell of a lot of PUGs and generally enjoyed examplaring and helping out lowbies. It was kind of therapeutic in all honesty.

As an SR Claws Scrapper, I always LOVED it when a Kinetics Defender joined the team. There weren't very many of them but the buffs were so much fun for me! :)

Shame you missed out, mate. It really was something special! :(

Frostfire was the one with the room with the ice slide thing heh - did that mission over 200 times helping new players.

When the game was new I spent way too many hours staying up too late completing task forces with the same group - likewise I don't recall any other game where people largely just clicked with the team mechanics and were mostly there to enjoy the experience not grief, etc.

Was kind of sad that a lot of the trial zone task force stuff didn't seem to fit into the regular game progression - can't remember what they were called off the top of my head but spent an enjoyable evening doing the Eden Trial with a great group once.

Hah, yes, I remember aggroing Atta quite a lot for lowbies as well to help them out.

Hami raids were absolutely mental. The frame rate on my poor old PC at the time was like a slideshow with a load of noise. :p

I wonder if there's anything out there that has a similar sense of community? I kind of have a hankering for guild play again now after a long spell playing single player games. I've not tried GW2 but think a number of players went to that instead? At least the ones that managed to get over the idea of playing anything else to do with NCSoft...

^^^ Brilliant! :D

My biggest regret is not taking enough screenshots and putting them in a safe place. :( At least Paragon Chat lets me get some portraits of my toons.

Might have to dig through my old hard drives tonight... I'd love to see others' screenies please!

Yes I remember you too!

Whelp just had a play with Paragon Chat - so much nostalgia - its ridiculous how much I can find just from memory without the ingame navigation aids as well heh.

Funny how they were just starting to really polish it up graphically when it died :s

I've not tried it but my brother went to GW2 and atleast with the people he plays with it mostly seems to be about highly finessing some kind of raid/boss type content and doesn't seem like there are a lot of players doing the rest of the game. (EDIT:He said they've put in weekly caps to try and encourage people to keep the rest of the game active as well).

First thing I instinctively did was get the top dog badge. :D

I remember me and a mate importing this before it was officially here in the UK - absolutely loved it; I remember doing those "events" which were basically a raid-type system that took you to various locations but took many, many hours to complete. What were they called? Task Force? I think in the later versions these were massively reduced to make them a bit easier to complete...

I stopped playing properly before City of Villains came into play, but it's still one of my most fondly remembered games. Nobody wanted my Bubble Defender in their group....until they experienced the power of it! :D

Task forces were the raid style chained missions that could take hours and needed a specific group size - also at times the devs were quite active spawning events like that as well.

Also hazard zone trials which had quite strict time limits to complete them in were similar to raids.

Anyone else here remember Proximity's radio thing he did?

The community (at least near the start) was amazing and people were so helpful. It was generally (especially at low level) easy to find a group and the game was so much more fun as a group and generally I think a group benefited from having a good range of classes.
I remember in the early days and low levels it was so easy to get a team as an empathy defender. A number of times I'd get whispered while in a team asking if I wanted to join a team. Later on (and at higher levels) people figured out the value of radiation and kinetics defenders, although a lot of people couldn't deal with the speed aspect of speed boost! Tanks were another class that was usually easy to get a team as.

Those early days when you saw your first few Kheldians, how special were those players!? Until you got to play them for yourself...

I was one that tended to do The Hollows more than Perez Park route.

While I did play a decent amount of CoV, I don't think it worked as well as CoH. I don't think the classes worked as well. But I think the biggest problem was the way it split the playerbase almost in half. I mean compared to many MMOs it didn't have a huge population as it was and then they split it. I did find it could get tricky in the higher levels to get teams after CoV.

I could probably go back if NCSoft reinstated everything, but I don't think I could go back to a fresh account. I put a lot of hours into that game and it just wouldn't be the same without it.

So who do people remember from the game and the forums?
From the forums I remember the name FloatingFatMan.
From in game I mostly just remember my friends, but I'm sure if you start mentioning well known people I'll remember a few.
