Hey guys,

I've been looking all over trying to find answers to these questions but I'm getting nowhere, so I was hoping that someone here who play one of or both of these games could help me out.

I'm thinking of buying it, but I can only find the Heroes/Villains combined edition at retailers in boxed form and not on the NC site available as a download. Am I doing something wrong or can you only get it in boxed form? (Hate waiting for post.)

I would also like to know if City Of Heroes/Villains supports widescreen resolution natively, as I hate buying a game to find I can't use 1440x900 in it and have to resort to tweaks or windowed mode.

Thanks a lot in advance.

P.S. Also, if anyone knows of any good reasons not to buy these, let me know. I am simply looking for a fun MMO and I've lost interest in things like Vanguard and DDO. Can't say I am tempted by WOW either.

well not sure about the first 2 things but

It gets VERY boring fast there is only so many times you can repeat the same thing over and over.

The pvp is dry unless you build especially for it and get the right class.

Its not a soloist game either, its VERY boring solo, which is good cos it gets manic when its 8 man groups doing the missions.

(i hate people that play small group MMOs :))

I played the beta and did'nt think too much of it. Never went into retail.
They reactivated old players accounts last weekend for the release of good vs evil, so there is proberly a small influx of new players like yourself.

If you are after a mmorpg to pass some time on, I reccomend Lineage 2.

I just found out there's a free-trial for City Of Heroes/Villains, so I am going to give that a try. I don't really know anything about Lineage 2, so I will get reading thanks. :)

I’m thinking of giving this a try too. I’m looking to get into a MMORPG with decent solo play (don’t really have time to play as part of a guild). Does anybody have any suggestions of other games worth looking at?

Played this at CoH release then got bored rapidly. Played the CoV beta and a bit after release and got bored rapidly.

It gets very boring, very quickly. :(

the best thing about it is the scope for individual costumes and the choice of power sets

it does get very boring solo...but like any MMORPG its the level gridning that gets boring..you can level up to about lvl 14 pretty quickly even solo

but after that you need to get in a team to gather money and XP as you simply get more in a large team

I have a couple of lvl40+ villains and the same of heroes and it kills me playing solo as its so slow to lvl this high up...get in a group though and you can hoover up XP pretty rapidly

they are good at introducing new content though...new costume parts and things, and issue 8 will be along soon with more stuff added..theres a good back story to it all with a good variation of enemies...

I don't really mind grind, I used to play Star Wars Galaxies. I love games that encourage grouping too, so that sounds like a positive in my book.

Character customisation is one of the things that is drawing me to this game. I've been looking at screenshots and videos all day and I have to say I'm impressed with what people seem to be able to do with their characters, seems not one looks the same (unless intentionally for a guild etc.)

Do lots of people play? A friend of mine keeps saying he's heard that the game is totally empty, but he doesn't play it. I do have a friend who plays Villains a lot but I've not seen much of him lately so I've not had chance to ask him stuff like this.

Getting the free trial at the moment, so I should be able to check it out soon. :)

I play on the union server and theres always people to team with

I have no idea how popular it is to be honest..theres bound the be figures somewhere

its nowhere near WoW popular I know that...but to be honest I prefer the superhero setting than the beardy setting...its also a more immediate game to play..theres no need to learn crafting and fishing...its an action RPG wich you can log on, play 20 minutes then log off

i purchased CoH first from the website, they send you the serial code via email and provide a download link, that was over a year ago now though.

I then found out that buying the CoV game added a few things to the game and cost no more to subscribe to, the one payment covers both games. So purcahsed that online as well!

I helped a few other people set up a team/guild (whatever they are called) but i got bored after about 3 months of playing. I am however thinking of going back to it for a couple of months.

I played COH constantly for 12 months and loved it ( on a usa server on launch ) the graphics are amazing the best i have seen on a online game .. i agree to some point that the game can get repetative , but if you get in with a good supergroup then its a great game to get into to - i will cherish the memories i had playing COH and its up there with UO and SWG ..

You played SWG? thats still like my fave game of all time. (yea I jumped out when the CU hit since it sucked :( )

anyway ever since me and afew friends have been looking for the same.. "MMO feel" I played WoW for abit got pretty advanced, probably too fast and ended up selling up.

I might also give CoV a go since the trials avail

Have to admit I am finding the trial very fun. Only problem so far is that the trial is restricted to US servers so there's a tiny bit of lag, and most people are online when I am in bed.

The few people that are around when I am up are way out of my level though so I've not grouped yet. It won't take me long to level a bit though. :)

I played CoH/CoV for close to 2 1/2 years, my account finally run out 2 weeks ago, I let my little cousin have my account since he loves the game so much.

Finding the right AT and powersets, will defiantly extend the life span of your character, it's worth making loads of different chracters and taking them up to at least lvl 10 to see how they play.
Find a chracter that's enjoyable and take your time :)

If you're after a pick up and play solo type MMO then you can't go wrong with guild wars, no monthly subs too.

I got bored of CoH very quickly, got one hero and one villian to lvl15 and gave up because i got fed up of the repetitive gameplay, "hero goes to stop the bank robber, beat them up" or "villian goes to rob the bank, beat up the guards".....same thing, same location, same everything.

GW is much more varied and doesn't require hours and hours of gameplay to get some rewards.

Aye I already play Guild Wars on and off, and it might sound crazy but I am looking for something a little more time-consuming. :p A proper MMO would be nice, like I said I used to play SWG and I loved it because the old combat system was so complex and it had an unsurpassed crafting system too.

City Of Heroes/Villains is definitely not complex, so it's admittedly not what I'm looking for, but I'm finding the trial very fun. Have two weeks to see if I get tired of it or not, if I do no big loss.

If I do get bored of this quickly then I will be back to square one. Someone suggested Lineage II and it looks quite good, but something with a deeper non-combat side would be nice (tradeskills etc.)

What link did you use to get the trial? I just did a search for "city of heroes free trial" on google and got this: http://uk.cityofheroes.com/faqs/answer/how_do_i_create_a_free_trial_account/ which appears to be the uk website, so I'd assume it would be the eu servers.
If you're registered on www.mmorpg.com you can get a 14-day trial through there. It says it's only open to North American people but you can get on it just fine, only drawback is you have no access to the European servers.

I think the free-trial you linked to is the one where a subscriber gets to give a buddy key to one person, so you need to know someone in the game to get one. Unfortunately the only person I know playing it had already used his, so I was sneaky and used the www.mmorpg.com American trial. ;)

A big issue I have with the game is unless it has changed with the new game release, The european servers are empty most of the time making the game quite borring as theirs maybe only 1 person on at any given time to team up with and no active supergroups at all. I pretty much took the first thirty days and havent contuinued the sub.

Was different with the US trial however, servers were very active at all times of day but buying the erope key code NC soft absolutly would not allow me to continue the US trial and refused to transfer my charactors over to my euro account which were far easier to level up do to more team players on the us servers.

NC soft wouldnt occomodate my needs so i cant be bothered to accomodate theirs by subscribing. some reason i cant drop my sub to planetside as i always find once i start I want to play for hours ;)

That sums up my feelings on GW too, I really enjoyed the game for a while but now I find it a little too simply, particularly in terms of combat, crafting, leveling and item collection. Also very much caters for guild/group play rather than soloing. Even playing through the storyline you really need to team up with real people because the henchmen are terrible.
