Civ 5...A rant from a very dissatisfied customer

OK...so I've just completed my first playthrough in Civ 5. I've been a massive fan of the series ever since the original and dread to think of the hours I've ploughed into these games over the years. In my opinion, the series has usually always gone from strength to strength. Not always a clearly better product, but at least progressive. 4 and its expansions were nigh-on perfection of the series. And now we have 5 and I'm left thinking it's been ruined somewhat. :(

OK, it's not all bad. The new social policy structure is a really cool addition. Stacks of doom disappearing is great. But my oh my, what have they done to the AI?!?!?!

Seriously, it is like playing against a retarded goldfish! :( Just waltzed through the game on Prince difficulty without ever feeling challenged. Even when I had neglected to build an army in the classical age, and got invaded. The AI just camped units around my base and let me pick them off with the city defences. This happened countless times throughout the game. They march around near your cities and ranged units letting you pick them off without retaliating.

Embarking your units onto the sea is a cool idea. It makes it much more favourable to expand across the oceans earlier in the game. But I thought it was silly how I could sail march them straight upto the walls of the enemies' cities without their defences firing on me. When the AI tried it on me I found out that actually you can defend against them, the AI had just neglected to!

In Civ 4, if I played on the normal diffculty (i.e. a level playing field for both you and the AI) then I would certainly expect to win but I would be challenged my intelligent foes who would act reasonably to most events. In Civ 5, it's like a Total War game; you have to disable yourself to make up for the stupidity of your virtual opponent. To go from such a strength to such a weakness is just do disappointing.

I played as the Egyptians so I had an advantage building wonders. But surely I shouldn't have been able to build 95% of them without even building a single production enhancing building?

Loads more I could add but my rant's running out of steam. Just wanted to post this up as probably like myself you won't bother to trawl through the massive main thread. This was an instant purchase for myself, and I felt my decision was supported by the reviews. How the critics have so unilaterally glorified this game is beyond me. Perhaps they just felt that criticising it would be too risky. But make no mistake, this game is in a beta stage at best. I really hope that what we currently have is a deeply flawed gem that can be remedied by patches and expansions. In its current state, I couldn't recommend you parting with your hard earned.

I myself played Civ4 enough to know what I was doing but never enough to really be great. I have entered Civ5 and I find it waaaay to easy, basically from the points you have mentioned above. On prince I completely wiped out everyone on my Island with just 3-4 swordsmen and a general. No defence put up, no attempt to knock me down, if anything they retreated too much. I am still enjoying the game though, but I agree that its early days. We need a patch...and soon!

good thread. i agree to all posts so far. civ4 = "too hard/much to learn" civ 5 = "too easy/is that it?". a patch/overhaul is required

I'm certain that patches/mods will enhance the AI, in the meanwhile, if you're finding it too easy on Prince then up the level to Emperor. Emperor is giving me some real challenges. That way you get to have a nice challenge with the added bonus that you dont get extra nasty frown wrinkles from all the stress of not liking the game :)

Surely just turn the difficulty up? If it's still easy on the top setting, then you've got something to shout about.

is it a challenge due to smart AI or a challenge due to cheating AI?

Cheating AI..but to be fair, if you never played a game where the AI cheated then your game collection would consist of about 6 titles :)

All depends whether you want to enjoy the game or just throw it in the bin. Doesnt really make any difference to me but thought I would give a suggestion where a person could get enjoyment rather than bin-filling :D

I've just had the AI launch a surprise invasion of me, capturing one of my cities. He had around 8 units sat just outside of my view range in a desert, I could see two of them with a scout I had sat on a hilltop with the visibility promotion. I decided to see what they were doing and moved closer to reveal the rest of his units sat behind the two I could previously see. He also had two or three scouts sat between my culture borders deeper into my land.

A few turns later he declared war me and swarmed one of my cities. I had managed to move some swordmen and one or two longbowmen into position behind a riverline next to the city. He only had spearmen and one or two more upto date swordmen and ranged units. I was one turn from getting longswordmen and had the cash to upgrade my units and also purchased one or two units. He managed to take the city but lost it a few turns later when more of my units arrived.

If I did not have that vision upgraded scout on the hill I would not be able to see his units preparing, his attack would be a complete surprise, even if the scout did not have the vision upgrade I would not have seen it coming as his units were just outside of a regular scouts vision. If more of his units were up to date he would have done better. Once I managed to clear his first wave of units away and retook the city he started sending in one or two single units and then stopped altogether.

Why exactly did you have to post a new thread to whine about Civ Vs AI flaws instead of posting in the Civ V thread exactly? Do you just want attention or something? Anyone who has even breathed on the Civ V thread knows the AI is its main weakness atm yet everyone continues to abuse its weaknesses.

Try galactic civ 2 mate (+ expansions).

Very good AI, and unlike any other game I've seen "in character" AI.

Read the first one though to the end to see just how far ahead (and more importantly in character) the AI thinks.

Cheers for the links Tefal. Have never really tried a space strategy game before unless you include Alpha Centauri. Am tempted to give either this or Sins of A Solar Empire a try.

Quoted for truth!

I wouldn't agree that Civ 4 = too hard. If Civ 4 was your first in the series then there is definitely lots to learn. But a few campaigns on easy difficulty modes should get you into the swing of it no troubles. :)

I did enjoy the game and I didn't get stressed out lol. Just wanted to make my point by having a good old fashioned rant! :p

It may sound like I was furious, but it's just that every new Civ game is something for me to get excited about. So it's disappointing when there are some glaring faults that have been introduced to a winning formula (and one that simply breaks the game to a certain extent).

Anyways, since posting here I tried out a higher difficulty mode.Went for a game on a Duel map on Emperor difficulty to test it out. Despite being technologically, financially and culturally bum****ed by my opponent, I walted in with a couple of archers and spearmen and owned my opponent. Despite being in Medieval he had only built Warrior units...

It proves that the AI is still stupid at high difficulty levels. This doesn't make for a fun experience when you know that the only reason you are finding it a challenge is by severely disabling yourself. This wasn't the case before, so it shouldn't be now either.

sins is very very different (and no where near as good imo) gal civ 2 is more like civ, it's turn based etc, sins is like a combat based space RTS with much less cultural/civilian stuff.

ie i don;t think you can win in sins though cultural or other means.

Surely just turn the difficulty up? If it's still easy on the top setting, then you've got something to shout about.

Think of it as a game of chess. Expert mode should be facing a grand master and novice mode should be playing someone with the intellect of a lobotimised heron. Instead, it's just like playing a Call of Duty game online against players with aim bots. If that's your idea of fun, then I would have to disagree.

That's not the point and surely you must realise that mate?

Why did you feel the need to come here post that? :p

Can you not handle more than one topic per game? ;)

Oh right...had been under the impression that it was turn based for some reason! :o

I like RTS anyway so will probably give them both a go! :p

I'm sure they'll sort the AI out, just hopefully not in an expansion. Everything else about civ 5 I love! It's streamlined, looks great and takes a lot of the annoyance out of having a big empire.

I'm a veteran from waaaay back to the original I played on the Atari, and I think this one has hooked me most since civ 2.
