Civ games

Civ3 is my preferred encarnation. I had a couple of play throughs of Civ4 but couldn't get to grips with the interface changes.

Call to Power was one of my favs way back - it was the whole future tech that tickled my nerd glands. Of course, going back further still I had the board game and picked up the original PC incarnation shortly after it's release... good times :)

I have to admit even though I love the Civ series I've never actually played the first one! I don't think the graphics are too bad on Civ 2. I used to play it in college as it was so easy to set up and easy to minimise.

But when playing Civ 2 I can't help but find it a bit old in some ways. Like the way it supports units and each city individually supports units instead of the nation as a whole. Also the lack of borders just makes it harder to see how big you are or your enemies are.

Oh and the Next War mod is included in BTS which you can buy retail or i think you can buy it through Steam too.

I'm desperately trying to cure my addiction and Empire Total War is just about doing it. What would be good is an Earth:Total war that goes right through the ages. I want to see my M-16 waving grunts decimate some dozy line infantry with muskets just because their empire wasn't up to speed with their research!

I played a lot of the Civ for Windows recently.

It's so basic, but that's what makes it so fun!

Tanks getting killed by a phalanx is a bit random though :p

I'm a huge fan of the first and original myself simply because it was just so basic and was very quick to get into.

And yeah, high technological units getting killed by frigging primative tribal units is one of the most dodgy things about the first game. Frustrating at times, yet also funny.

civ2 is simply unplayable due to the rubbish graphics.

Yeah I never really got on with civ2 very well, I'd be more inclined to re-play 1! Incidentally, I only ever came across civ by accident, I bought a compilation pack for lemmings (which I'd played and really wanted to get), and elite (which I thought sounded really cool). Civ was the third, and thought I may as well give it a go. I've probably lost more hours to it and it's sequels than to any other game!

Exactly!!!

Think I'd have to rate it:

CTP>Civ4>Civ1>Civ2

Very close between CTP and 4 though. "Next War" could push Civ4 into the lead though!

Yeah thats how I got into it. Had a triple pack with either Settlers 2 or Sim City 2000. Some Terminator game and Civ 2.

My brother bought it for me and regretted it so much as it was so boring to watch. :p
