CIV IV

I wish they'd make a SMAC 2 instead of civ 5. Not that I dislike civ... just that there's already 4 of them, and smac was just brilliant.

Agree with that.

I preferred researching future technologies and playing non-baggage leaders instead of the cartoony historic figures in the Civ series.

As to the original post, I don't play the game that often single player. Just too repeative, although I'm not up on the intricates of the game that would allow for slightly more varied play.

1 thing I cannot seem to do is go into space or use the SDI. I have everything built and researched but no idea how fly to Alpha Centauri :(

You cannot "use" the SDI, it has a passive effect. It causes 75% of ICBMs launched against you to be shot down automatically.

To get to Alpha Centauri (Space Race Victory) you have to build each part of the spaceship first.
1 docking bay
1 life support
1 cockpit
1 stasis chamber
1 engine (2 ideally, but 1 will get you there)
5 casings
5 thrusters

Once you've built the spaceship it should launch automatically. Or if you have the expansions, an image of the spaceship comes up after part is built, with a "launch" button at the bottom.

You cannot launch the spaceship if you have already won or lost the game. Some civs might continue building spaceship parts after the game has been won/lost, but that's just the AI carrying on.

once you've played 3-4 games, you've seen it all. don't get your money's worth imo.

The replayability lies in adapting the way you play...

Choose a completely different style of nation and try to win another way. Try conquering quickly, try conquering slowly, try the space race, try having everyone surrender to you (protectorates) etc...

Also, try different lengths of game on different difficulty levels, it really changes the gameplay! A short game on high difficulty is manic! A short on easy is a nice blitz, a long on blah blah blah... You see?

Though, tbh, no Civ has ever come close to Civ2 - that game was Awesome! And it wasn't 'cartoony' either (which is my only main grudge on the new ones really).
