Hi guys.

If you are having a civil wedding taking place in a different district to one in which you live, do you need to give notification of marriage to the authority you are getting married in, or to the authority where you live?

Thanks,

Mal

In England and Wales both the bride and groom need to have been resident in the country for at least seven days prior to giving notice (in Scotland this isn’t necessary). If they live in different districts, both districts must be notified of the intended wedding. If the couple wishes to marry in a different district from where they both live, contact must first be made with the Superintendent Registrar of the district where the marriage is planned. Once the availability of the chosen date is confirmed, contact must be made with the local Superintendent Registrar to give notice. If the bride and the groom have problems attending together, then notice must be given no later than 15 days before the marriage date. If the reason for not attending together is because one party is living or working abroad, the Superintendent Registrar must be contacted for advice. The Superintendent Registrar will inform the couple when the certificate is authorised to allow the marriage to continue. This will be the earliest date that the marriage can take place. If the marriage is to take place in another district, both certificates are necessary.
