I think the only similar thing that both game has is that the camera is positioned in the bird's eye view angle. Other then that, might as well say Roblox tycoon games are the best civ type games.
1,097 hours on steam since it was released say it's well worth it on my standards.
Follow the in game tutorial and give it a go on one of the easier settings to get to grips with what you need to do (balance short, medium and long term goals) then it'll click...
It's going to surpass my most played civ soon (4) which is an achievement as 4 was released when I was a teenager with significantly more free time/less responsibilities.

Its definitely a game that has that just one more click thing going for it. I finished my Korea game with a science victory at about turn 270, so pretty good I think. I then did a random leader pick and got England, Japan announced war on me very early for forward settling them, but they were sent packing and then I went and took one of their city's before making peace. Went back to working on culture which was going surprisingly well (but oddly so was my science - usually early on one or other struggles for me), and then at about turn 200 two civs decided to declare wars of territorial expansion on me. One didnt attack and the other attacked very poorly, so I decided to rush jet bombers (already had bi-planes) and take it to them. 60 or so turns and one nuke later I had decimated all the other civs (the first of the two to declare war was left for last and one nuke to his capital and then a quick walk in by a tank and it was over 
) and done a domination victory.
Funny thing was I was still only about 2 turns from a culture victory and about 5 from a science one lol
Might have to step up to Immortal level next time out.
