Claim, or not to claim...?

So I was "love tapped" the Monday. Came up to a junction and the guy behind me bumped me resulting in no dent, but paint work damage.

The guys was driving like a tool way before the incident, and he is only a young lad that tried to make out he didn't do it. The car he was driving was covered in bumps and scuffs. Upon him finally pulling over after I followed him to exchange details, he wanted me to do it outside of the insurance company, citing that it was a work car and that going through insurance will take ages. I didn't have any pen or paper to hand, but a trusty recording made on the phone was made to record the conversation with him.

I have a feeling this guy either doesn't have insurance, or isn't going to pay up if I get it repaired and invoice him, which is what he was asking me to do.

Anyway, obligatory picture of said damage....

Whats peoples thoughts on this.... just make a claim and suck it up next april as the renewal will take a hit, though I think I have protected no claims.

Oh, and guess the car...

I'd get a quote from a smart repair company and get him to pay them direct.

How would that work? Just phone them up and say a third party will make payment? Have you ever tried this? I guess I have no trust in the third party what so ever :(

Also, whats the best place to get reviews on these types of companies?

i have done this in the past, i was the person that did the damage, i just phoned the company up and payed them direct.

if you can just get the cash off him direct all the better.

Get a coupla quotes, tell him how much.

Ask for the cash to pay or failing that tell him you will go through insurance.
Have you actually polished/TCut it? Pic is hard to make out wether that's paint transfer or paint scraped off

The trouble is, op doesn't trust the little rascal but if he contacts the guys insurance company, assuming he is actually insured, its out of his hands.

But if you do decide to take his word he'll pay, don't get any work done until you have a quote and he's sent you the money.

Just be firm and say "its going to cost x amount, I need you to send it now or I'll go through your insurance, if you've given me false details I'll call the police"

Get them to provide a quote, pass to third party, who then rings repairer and pays upfront - repairer then call you to arrange repair.

Have done this in the past (although using a main dealer), and had no issue once the third party realised they weren't going to be wiggling out of paying for the repair (i.e. either they pay or I get the police involved to get their insurance details, and go through insurance)

Repairers aren't usually bothered who pays, but it's obviously in your interest to get the payment made before the work is carried out.

Close, E91!

Anyway, so my instincts told me to check out the car via the tax and mot checker... Oh look. No tax or MOT, so its not going to have any insurance.

Tax due: 20 August 2016
✗ No MOT
Expired: 02 July 2016

Ive got a price from a mobile chap who is local, and I am gonna pop down the BMW garage that has done a paint repair on my car before for some flakey paint that they made worse when they washed it, and see what they come up with and try to call this lad this afternoon, but I expect the details he has given me is rubbish.

What now? If I can get hold of him, I guess I can play the, you pay or I call the police on you, if I can't get hold of him? I guess I have to pay it myself. :(

@@@@@@@ stupid kid.

Nope. So I don't think I am going to be able to get hold of him now... I am expecting some random number that he has given me, and so I am going to have to fork out myself.

If that happens, is it worth still contacting the police about it at all, or not bother? Will the police basically want me to speak to my insurance company?

sort it out, phone him(if you get to him) and get him to pay it back.

police won't do much about it at all tbh.. I would not involve your insurance at this time as it'll cost you money.

Have you tried cleaning it up yourself yet? Like someone said earlier that may well just be paint transfer and polish out without too much effort.
