Clarification on resolution

Hi,
Only just started to look into VR and there is one question I just can't find the answer too.

With the likes of VR Desktop and VR theatre, what is the resolution of the Virtual screen?

Thanks

Even if the screen is virtual it would still have an equivalent resolution, I may not be explaining myself well as i can't get my head round it.

If a 4k screen has 3840 × 2160 and that is placed say 5m away from you.
The CV1 has 2160 x 1200 but is inches infront of your eyes.

So if you created a 100'' virtual screen is it possible to recreate an equal experience to a physical equivalent.
I still have time to convince the Mrs we need to get one (when I say we....) will have to hunt down a demo somewhere.

With the current generation of VR videos/games aren't going to look as clear compared to a 1440 or even a 1080 screen. If you want the experience of a huge screen but with lower quality then VR can do that, but it's not going to compete with a traditional screen a few metres away in terms of quality.

Even compared to my 1680x1050 screen the vive has more noticeable pixels/SDE and lower resolution. The CV1 may be 2160x1200 but each eye is only seeing a 1080x1200 image - 62.5% the number of pixels compared to a 1080p TV as when watching TV both eyes see the full 1920x1080.

In games where you're interacting with it and feeling fully immersed it's something that's easy to forget about. Using a HMD to watch a movie I think you'd notice it far more.

^ The resolution of these headsets is 1080x1200 per eye. when you use a monitor both eyes see the whole panel so you get the benefit of the whole screen, with a hmd each eye only sees on panel, so that halves the effective resolution straight away, then you have to lose some pixels to warping / optics... using a headset is probably the equivalent of 480p... now imagine an old SD video on a 100" screen a few meters away and you are probably not far off

edit: or watch a standard def transmission on your TV, but stand so close it nearly fills your entire view... thats not far off to be honest because if I do that with my 60" I can nearly see a bit of SDE

At the moment, the virtual resolution of the virtual desktop is the same as what your monitor is set to. So, 1920x1080 monitor, the virtual desktop in these programs is kind of set the same. But, like others have said it doesn't really matter because it's a virtual screen.

Is the footage people show on a monitor of both eyes representative of the quality each eye is seeing in real life?

If so and the resolution is the same than even the DK2 footage in Elite Dangerous looks miles ahead of a 480p image.

No its not. The actual image you see through a DK2 is much much worse than those videos make out.

Go and get a sieve or collander from the kitchen and look at them again through that, it might be similar
