So these are really to try and phase out core 2 duo? Don't seem quite worth it right now with the price tag.

In a way yes because both AMD & Intel are working towards fully integrating CPU(s) and GPU(s) into one package which is going to become more mainstream over the next year or so.


Azza, do you think there would be that much advantage upgrading from say an 8600 -> i5 661 given the very poor memory performance of Clarkdale?

If you wanting best overall performance especially for gaming then no. It's priced exactly the same as the i5 750, which requires the same socket motherboard and that gives much better overall performance so would be better upgrading to that. Obviously you need the graphics card to go with that CPU.
 
Bleh could just get a phenom II or athlon II for the same price and it will generally perform better. Its an old i5/i7 with less cores but using HT... meh... not impressed. 32nm dosent make up for the lack of 2 cores.

Think you're missing the point.
