Just wondering if we have any Class 2 drivers on the forum who could give out any info regarding job

I have decided to go for my class 2 licence for a career change. I am based near Glasgow and wondered if anybody knew how easy it is for new drivers to get work and best place to sit test etc

Cheers

Oddly I did my one about a year ago, but then the other work I do kept me busy so I didn't do any driving.

Work wise I get the impression there is work out there, but you can't be picky.

As far as sitting the tests goes, your HGV trainer will arrange the test. But many have their own yard registered as test centres. This is nice since you'll be doing you test in the same place where you've practised.

As far as the theory tests go, there will almost certainly be a venue in Glasgow.

As far as finding work goes, I've just started talking to agencies. I get the impression there is work out there, but as a new driver you will be at the bottom of the pile. You also might have to start off doing 7.5t work.

I did my Class 2 about 4 months ago but have put off looking for work until I've passed my Class 1 since a lot more doors will open up and it will pay for itself rather quickly.

Thanks for info

I wouldnt mind doing 7.5t work to be honest. The job i am in the now, if i stay much longer i will end up swinging from a tree lol so will take any work to start.

Hoping to have passed for April. Here is hoping

Cheers

I'm a transport manager for a well known logistics company and I know that we do not have drivers who only have limited driving experience. Good luck though.

I have seen companies who welcome new drivers and willing to train them. Also others only want experience.

I have seen that there is a shortage of drivers allegedly. Is that a true reflection in your opinion?

You have to start somewhere, as with all companies.. Some want experience some are willing to take lesser experienced people. Pay a little less and see that as an investment,

We didn't see the driver shortage as badly as we anticipated if I'm honest. We are year on year busier as well so we are using more than we were before. What does help when we use agencies to fill gaps is that we are a good company to work for with good pay and very easy runs so the agency drivers often choose us over other work.

Did my Class 2 around 2008, was good money then and the decent job were hiring.

Sadly it caved around my area just after the "economic downturn" and things round here are pretty grim still. £10ph was a figure I saw for 7.5t work.

The job I had at the time was £29k and is now being advertised for £22.5k.

It's good to have and if you can get in with the better employers then you should be fine. Skip and Tipper drivers get a lot more than courier drivers it seems.

Try and get the Class 1 and get into the tanker work.

We did have a depot in Glasgow but we've moved to Motherwell. We employ Class 2 drivers and pay them the same rate as Class 1.

The reason for that is the Class 2's do considerably more work than the Class 1's

If you stay on (no fly by night) We'll even upgrade you to Class 1

Ive got my Class 2, had it since 2005 but only started using it from the middle of last year

There seems to be a mixed bag of employers, from ones that are constantly pressuring you to meet unotainable targets (Carlsberg) to a few that are steady away and relaxed

I mainly did agency last year, but was very picky after experiencing moronic employers ^^^ , as in my eyes it was an accident waiting to happen. So if I didnt like the company, I just left and tried another one

Im now working direct for one of the biggest Haulage firms in the world, no pressure, days, no weekends, my own Truck/dont have to share with other employees, usually finish at around 12pm but get paid for the full day. I got lucky

I passed my Class 2 last week - work purposes rather than looking for a new job so can't really add a lot.

I think down this way in south of UK you need a class1 for decent money from talking to people in the business.

I did actually contact your company with regards to whether they start new drivers

Nobody responded to me so i will take that as a resounding NO!! haha

Cheers anyway for tip ;)

To a new driver, I'd advise you register with as many employment agency's as possible and don't be picky as to what work they offer you, once you've shown you turn up and can do the job things will snowball from there.

It's all down to experience, the more you get the more work you will be offered.

A lot of employers will take on new drivers , you just have to show willing and take it from there.

Get your Class 1 though, a quick glance at motorway traffic will show you there's far more artics on the road than rigids.
