Clean install of 10.5 from updgrade disc

Thanks.. I must have gone blind with excitement after buying a new mac mini for my own Christmas Gift... Is there a way to get it to install without having having tiger on the hdd first? I sure i can remember one of the older os upgrade discs asking you to put the previous versions cd in to check that you have the rights for a upgrade... or was that windows???

I'm sure you can. Even Windows upgrade discs do clean installs.

Although Vista is a pain the way it makes you boot into Windows before you can wipe & install. It won't let you do it booting from the DVD.

no idea, the upgrade disc is just the same as the retail version. I think your thinking about Windows 98 or something.

You can erase Tiger from the drive, when you do erase and install no need for it to be there.

The upgrade disc needs a previous installation of OSX on the drive before it will install

How does this work on a clean partition then? Do you have to have a previous version of windows installed?

Good question. All I know is I stuck a Business Edition of Vista in the drive, booted from disc, it went through the steps up until the point where you enter the serial number. After you enter the number and click next it said something along the lines of [paraphrased] "to upgrade this version of Windows please reboot and access the disc via My Computer." It wouldnt let me continue, neither did it offer the option of Erase and Install.

I did it the way it told me to and I had both Upgrade and Clean install options. It was just weird after having years of doing XP installs. I really don't know how it would work on a clean partition but I'm sure there must be a way.

I understood there is no such thing as an upgrade to OS X, each disc contains a full version of the OS. Boot from the disk (hold down the 'c' key at start up with disc in drive) and follow the instructions, erase and install is quickest or you can chose Disk Utility from the menu at the top and zero out the hard drive first.
