Clean install of windows 10 .... Grrrrr

GCSvslN.png

For anyone else struggling to follow this thread.

I'm having the same issue currently. I did the upgrade to convert 7 pro into 10 pro, then did a clean install but this time installed from a 10 pro ISO that I downloaded from microsoft volume license.

I can't activate or change my serial number to that of the 7 pro key that was initially installed.

Since reading through the link above I'm wondering if this is because the serial number that's initially installed with 10 pro is different to the "defaults" listed in that link?

Eitherway I've built a new 10 pro USB image using the media creation tool ready to install again and see what happens

You shouldnt need to install a serial / product key. Just click on skip for now and let it activate automatically. It might not activate straight away.

on W10 clean install it will ask twice for a key, skip them both and once the PC is on the net it will activate, did with mine and didn't enter a key once

I didn't have to enter a key at all, tried my W7 one but said its not valid so skipped them both and all was fine once my PC had finished installing W10

You sould not enter a key for 10 at all. If the upgrade activated and fresh 10 installed should auto activate.

Hmmm, thats what I thought was supposed to happen but it just won't activate. Just complains that it failed and I should try again later.

I know some people had issues the night it came out due to the sheer volume of people trying to activate but I wouldn't have thought that would be the case now?

Give it a chance. Remember USA is coming alive now so probably servers getting bogged down again!

when I first installed my W10 I had to sit there and just keep pressing activate and after about 10 attempts it activated and has been since

Wouldn't the VL edition need a KMS or MAK key to activate?

Your upgrade would have given you an OEM key/license. Try downloading the ISO using the MS tool.

Or get the ISO from mrbell1984's OneDrive linked in the FAQ.

The MS download created ISO did work and activate for me but it wouldn't import in to MDT or Windows ICD. The ISO linked in the OneDrive link also activated and I didn't have any issues with MDT.

This is exactly what I was thinking. It will need a MAK to activate technically but just hoped that it would detect my hardware and activate.

I do have an activate button but no matter how many times I click it I get the same issue. I've got an ISO created using the Media Creation tool so will give that ago tonight

OK, so I can confirm that using an ISO from volume Licensing of W10 Pro won't activate even if you've already upgraded to W10 from an older OS prior to the fresh install, but the W10 Pro ISO you can create using the media creation tool activates fine from a fresh install.

Formatted my Intel NUC again this evening and it was activated by the time I logged in for the first time.

Anyone got a screenshot of Disk Management after a clean install?

Just wondering which of these partitions I can remove..

Have had to re-install W8.1 Pro as W10 Pro would not activate, had upgraded first, activated then tried a clean install.

Will wait out till it all settles down.
