Hi,

Fresh install of Windows 8.1 64bit on my 256gb SSD.

Windows said 222gb free of 238gb when I first installed it.

After doing all the updates it now says 206gb free of 238gb.

Surely I couldn't have installed 16gb worth of updates and the windows install be a size of 32gb??

Matt

if its windows update run disk clean up as it cleans the update folder as well (does on windows 7) may give you your space back.

it shouldn't be using that much space

I also disable system restore and delete all the restore points to save on SSD usage

Ive just disabled system restore and its given me nothing back. Ive also run disk clean and it says i can cleanup 27.3mb. Something aint right surely?

Ive just made onedrive available online only so it doesn't sync stuff and store it on my pc and its made my available 209GB , that's still loads missing somewhere

remove all previous restore points

Open System by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, right-clicking Computer, and then clicking Properties.

2.In the left pane, click System protection. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

3.Under Protection Settings, click Configure.

4.Under Disk Space Usage, click Delete.

5.Click Continue, and then click OK.

Did you clean up system files when doing the disk cleanup?

Disk cleanup - clean up system files - more options - system restore and shadow copies - clean up.. - delete - OK - delete files

Or Windows key + pause - system protection - configure.. - delete

Hi,

Yeah done that and still no different. Still says 209GB left

Done all that , no change

Delete all the files from this folder: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

You can also clean out component store. Open a command prompt as an Administrator.

To check the current usage, use this command: dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore

To perform a thorough clean up, use this command: dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

It'd also be a good idea to run CCleaner.

how much ram you have installed? if 16gb it will reserve 16gb of ssd space as pagefile

so reduce it to 2 and a half gb

Windows will reserve space for the pagefile and space for the hibernation file. Go to a command prompt and type dir c:\ /a and press Enter. You should see entries for pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys. The latter will be 8 GB.

You can turn hibernation off. If space is tight, you can move the pagefile to another disk, but leave a 2 MB pagefile on C: - Windows uses it for crash dumps.

Ive turned off hibernate and I only have 1 hard drive in this computer (this 256Gb SSD). If I set the pagefile to 2mb will it run as good as it is now?

Right... Ive just restarted my computer and then tried the disk clean and this time it cleaned loads off. Took ages to do (literally an hour) but its now showing 225GB free!!!
