Cleaning inside a rucksack

This is OcUK forums, so I expected posts like the one from Tobes. I was hoping to get answers as well, which I have. Thanks to the people who made those posts.

He's right though. Surely you could find some 'proper' info on a hiking site or something. Even google would throw up washing a rucksac!

Might start a thread 'how do I wash between my toes? Any ideas?'

Jeebus!
Maybe throw it the washing machine on 30 or if in doubt handwash it ???

Repeat the above for, erm ... anything that needs washing.

I love people like you (stupid).

You can't 'just throw' a waterproof coat/bag/etc in the washing machine. The salts in normal detergents will destroy the waterproof membranes. Products such as the Nikwax ones spec'd above are made from vegetable extracts, which don't damage the waterproofing ability.

OP: I recommend the Nikwax ones over Grangers because you do not need to heat the product afterwards to 'activate' it :)

i have a Karrimor and i use it when im biking. what i do is go outside in the back and hose it down with warm water whilst squirting some fairy liquid on and in it , when you get a good amount of suds keep on hosing until its soap free.

If its not the non-bio Fairy Liquid I really hope its not a waterproof bag, otherwise it won't be for long :p

Hot water. Soak sponge in hot water. Wring out excess water. Use lots of elbow grease to clean inside. Dry with towel. Place on radiator.

Should work for most rucksacks. If you spill anything to serious inside in use fire. Never fails.

most bags aren't waterproof though, some have rubbish "water repellancy" which does nothing! trust me, i had to sleep in a survival bag once when someone thought their bag was actually waterproof. Gave them my sleeping bag because they were shivering loads in the survival bag.

Aye, but as you know, its not a good idea to wash the ones that are in fairy liquid :D:p

If the bag is so old that your afraid of getting it wet than its time for a new bag. As a rucksack it should be pretty versitile and be able to be cleaned with just about anything. All you have to do is turn it inside out, get a bucket with soap anf hot water and a wash rag, dip the washrag into the bucket and get it real nice and wet, wash the bag.

Do you need help with anything else? washing your car, showering, eating?

I have a rucksack that I use daily for everything. I have a habit of carrying umpteen things around that I don't need, so it's useful.

It really needs cleaning inside. All sorts of things have been spilled in it (e.g. shampoo, shower gel, various cleaning lotions, etc).

Any idea as to the best way to go about it? It's a Karrimor, 20 years old or more. I've no idea how washable it is.

Thats the ones on the metal frame had one of these there lovly

but hand wash it only or it will fall apart:D
