Cleaning off CPU paste

I bought some of the stuff you mentioned recently (to remove the thermal pad on the bottom AC Freezer Pro 64) works good, but if your just cleaning the CPU tissue paper as above should work fine.

With the old CPUs that had the core actually exposed (Sckt A Athlons) i would always use a small amount of Isopropyl Alcohol on a piece of lint free cloth.

Came up a treat, also very useful when cleaning the bottom of a HSF as gets most of the old paste out of the grooves in the bottom.

Just for the record I use

(Akasa Citrus cleaning fluid only if there is real gunk on the CPU)

isopropyl spray + bog roll

then

isopropyl spray + bog roll

then

isopropyl spray + Lint free cloth

I suffer from a condition known as overcleaning! ;)

Just using tissue paper is no good as it does not get the ingrained old and nasty goop off properly.

Using some form of TIM or whatever works best but, tissue paper is not good enough alone. I use a multi purpose solvent cleaner, that is for cleaning grease and all that stuff off brakes and machines etc.

nasty goop
Thats what I put a few drops of Akasa citrus on, leave it for a few seconds and it just wipes off. Don't encounter that much 'nasty goop' these days, mainly when I am patching up an older machine for someone and there is some strange pink bubble-gum TIM lurking underneath the heatsink, also underneath some northbridges etc

I highly recommend buying a can of isopropyl spray from the high-street, costs about £6.00 and will last you a few years, handy stuff!

You really should be using a lint free cloth as the paste you are removing will be replaced with..well...lint. Little specs of 'bog roll', barely visible to the naked eye, will affect heat conduction from the cpu to the heatsink - how much depends on how cheap the 'bog roll' is lol. Buy some lense cleaners or if you're cheap some coffee filters will do the trick.

Some nail varnish removers have added moisturisers (oil) that will not evapourate when used, if you have to use nail varnish remover(acetone) then make sure it dosn't have any added crap in it.

I use IPA and lense cleaner - cant see the point of buying decent paste if your cpu+HS are not cleaned correctly beforehand.;)
