If you do scratch the hell out the perspex use something like Xerapol to buff out scratches, costs about £12 for 50g kit.
I remember using a product very similar to this one at school many years ago and it removes the scratches easy as pie. (Although we had a buffing wheel to do ours at school rather than doing it by hand)
