Clearing snow & liability

If you are only clearing the snow from the footpath you are only doing half the job. You should clear both the snow and ice to make the footpath safe. If you aren't prepared to clear the ice under the snow as well then it is just going to make it more dangerous for everyone and it is better to just leave it.

Around my local estate the council hasn't gritted any of the roads or footpaths as they say it is residential and not a priority. So along my road most people have taken the initiative and properly cleared the footpath outside of their own house.

I emailed my local council (North Tyneside) about whether I was liable for any injuries arising from me clearing the path outside my house. I got an email back from their Claims and Insurance team (says a lot that they need such a team!) telling me to go for it - just so long as I shovelled everything into the gutter.

Broom > Shovel

Or if needed a combo of both. It only takes a couple of mins to completely clear everything down to the original ground. No salt, no ice, no grit, just common sense. It's a lot easier to clear the ground before people and cars have compressed it.

Yeah, as pretty as it is, the best way to clear snow from your property is the second it stops falling.

Grit seems to work fine on my path. I cleared it and gritted the path the other day and it's fine. We've had about a foot and a half of snow recently so it's not as if it isn't cold here either!

dont be daft

Nobody has had 18 inches of snow. When quoting you have had "x ammount of snow" you need to take an average of the depth of snow around several different locations.

Just because there is a drift thats over a foot deep, doesnt mean you've had a foot and a half of snow.

I bet if you go and take a tape measure and measure the average dept of the snow in the middle of your back garden where theres no drifting, and average this from the front garden, snow on the garden walls etc.. its probably more like 8 inches.
