My old primary hard drive (Maxtor) has developed what I believe to be some problems. It's been working fine until today, when this morning it clicked once, then about 10 seconds later the PC froze completely. Another minute later it restarted itself, and came up with the CHKDISK on bootup.

It then worked fine for a few hours after that, after which the exact same thing happened again. This has never happened before today.

I know Maxtor aren't the best drives in the world, I've had two of them fail on me in the past, but not with these symptoms. Is it about time for me to replace this one or is there anything that can be done?

If you need to copy data off it, two great repair utils are HDD regenerator and/or Spinrite 6. After copying data off it, secure wipe the drive, bin it and get a new one.
