careful, tdp relates to the thermal output of the card, not the required electrical input.
Im well aware, just correcting sr4470 value. Thermal Design Power is the maximum amount of power dissipated by the cooling. Other than work done by the fan, all that's left is electrical energy dissipated as heat. Depending on where the set point for the thermal profile is and assuming headroom it could be higher than the actual supply power. For consumed power the number of connectors comes from the PCI-SIG specification.

yes, it can and should be higher. but thats the point - tdp isnt the power required, which is what ultimately governs how many power connectors the card needs. if it needs to draw more than 150watts at any time. its going to need more than 1 pci-e connector:)

Glad I bought a SC Ultra, it made my E-P3n1$ Bigger for longer than Viagra could have, even more so for peeps who have had a GTX since day 1 and price is irrevelant. :D

IMO, the 2 new cards are Poop.

i can almost guarantee on launch day here they will be sold out, must some something magical to some people to replace a number on a cards name

The thing is though, not everyone who buys one will be upgrading from an 8800 series card. There's probably people out there building new systems, or upgrading an older card for whom the 9800GTX may represent a good purchase (depending on price, obviously).

Guess if people buy them why not make them. But anyone who's wise would just try pick up a 8800 GTX instead the price of them can only get cheaper. If there is so little in it.Which it looks as if it is.A cheap 8800 GTX would be a good stop gap till the true next gen.

I say could because I have to guess NV's thermal design envelope, but yes a margin is evident from test results. From experience I know not all manufacturers use the same TDP criteria or even consider 100% utilisation (diversity). What I'm getting at is whilst they correlate, there is no direct relationship. Given naked IC's, passive vrm heatsinks, fans etc, then the design for peak power capacity (# connectors) isn't necessarily lower than the cooling TDP.

I think we are all disappointed by the 9800gtx but I guess if you are in the market for a new card and dont have an 8 ssries already its worth a look

I don't know why people always write this. If you bought the GTX at the original launch price, all that says is that you could have purchased it a lot later, for a cheaper price and it still wouldn't go out of date.

People who bought GTX's aren't "lucky". I could buy one now for near two hundred, get amazing performance and it still wouldn't be out of date. Plus, it's not a goddamn "investment", it's a graphics card, anyone can buy one, they're rare, precious items or pieces of art and they're worth nothing compared to their launch prices of about half-a-grand.

Emm, not quite! Just seen the power of 98GTX with the lastest FW174.XX and its amazing overclockability. I actually think it is quite competitive to other G92 cards. Certainly, there's no need for an upgrade for those G92 owners. But I don't think they would spend again whatsoever. Because G92 was just released last Nov, and all G92 owners have just own their cards for less than 4 months. So obviously, NV is targeting to those who haven't got a G92 and looking for an upgrade during the Easter:)

ForceWare 174.20 brings GeForce 9800GTX up to speed
Written by Andreas G 14 March 2008 20:05

We previously reported about how the drivers limited the performance of the coming GeForce 9800GTX. Just moments later, new drivers leaked and they were specifically designed to bring the performance of the GeForce 9800 series up to what we would expect from it. After seeing some tests with the new drivers, we can only conclude that they are working well. Based on this, GeForce 9800GTX will become the new single-GPU king of the hill, now that the GeForce 8800 series has reached the end of the line. We would like to see some new tests with GeForce 9800GX2 and the new drivers, as the first review was a bit wobbly.

Why test a 9800gtx in 3dmark01 & 3dmark03

Yes I did, all that did was fix the low scores on a couple of benches. And now they're referring to results from a volt modded card. The scores aren't that remarkable, 2500+ memory helps. 03 is good and 01 still looks very low.

i'm not convinced. nVidia is well known for releasing "emergency press drivers" that make the card render certain things differently, or not at all (like AA!!!) in some programs (like 3dmark0x) which "boosts" performance
