Clicking drive?

Hi guys,

Quick bit of advice needed. Recently rehomed my home server into a new case and replaced all my fans. Anyway it is now much quieter than before and I’ve noticed a regular but intermittent clicking while the hard drive is spun down.

Current setup is 8tb Samsung qvo ssd with 8tb seagate ironwolf hdd. The ssd effectively backs up twice daily to the hdd and rest of the time the hdd is spun down.

I have stopped all the fans in the case and the clicking persists and when the hdd spins up the click stops or possibly is masked by the noise from the drive. My worry is that the hdd is potentially failing, having stopped all the fans I can’t think of anything else in the case with moving parts so assume it must be the drive.

It’s now 10 years old and on 52000 hours run time so not unreasonable that it may need replacing but given that the same drive is now £70 more new than I paid 10 years ago, makes sense to check before throwing down all that money . Also all the SMART data says it’s good via crystal disk, anyone think of any other checks to do or just replace it?

Some drives will make some noise, usually drive read heads being 'parked' when the disc spins down, but it can also be a sign of impending failure. If you have anything important on it I'd be copying it off ASAP just in case.

Most large drives make a noise at predetermined intervals. It's actually a health check feature rather than something bad going on
Ofc if it makes a clicking noise all the time then yeh the drive is on the way out but a scan should let you know

Mines constantly makes a clicking noise and fails smart tests. Been running like that for about 5 years :p
