Clinton Cards to go into Administration

Well there are some 'bargain' card shops opened up around here in the last couple of years. Also, I think a couple of the supermarkets now sell a range of cards that are <£1. I know that they have staff, rent, bills etc to pay just like any shop but the mark-up on cards that sell for £3-5 must be huge.

Shocker as charging £7.50 for a piece of printed paper becomes an unsustainable business model.

Shame to see jobs go though as said.

I can’t remember the last time I used as card shop. It’s either a supermarket or Smiths for me. I presume that there is not much of a place for them in high street these days.

Good. 'Cards' are the most bull **** industry about. Here, have a few gsm of overpriced printed paper that expresses a sentiment I couldn't possibly have come up with myself. Have not used clintons in years because their prices are so extortionate.

Sad to see another company enter administration, even though I think cards are vastly overpriced and a waste.

Interesting to see though that even though they are having problems at the moment, HMV and WHSmiths still have their necks above the water, probably because they diversified. The end of the high street if these two go under?

They have exactly the same problem as Game had, far too many stores. Even some small towns have multiple branches of Clintons often within sight of each other. I suspect this will mirror Game, into administration, bin all the duplicate stores and emerge again a far leaner organisation.

Im suprised they lasted this long, they didn't have the cheapest cards and that makes it hard to compete with places like card factory where there are about 5 cards for £1 sometimes.

Even if they were to a higher standard, people are growing more and more concerned about the price of things.

This is very true. In Milton Keynes alone there are 5 stores, 2 of which are in the same shopping centre a 2 minute walk apart.

Cards must make a killing though. I mean, obviously it's just a bit of paper. Yet they sell them for several quid, 'posh' bits of paper go for over a fiver.

Lol

I worked for Clintilons in my late teens, my store (became manager withinin 6 weeks ) could turn over £1k a day no problems, not even during seasonal events. Hard to see how they have fallen so far

They bought Birthdays and Pure Party. Very sad, my mother has worked for them for many years! Time to go help her find something else :)

They have some fantastic staff, which compared to a lot of other shops are actually happy and help quite a lot (I worked for Birthdays & Pure Party shops in my late teens).

There is a card shop down the road that sells 10x generic birthday cards for £1 with envelopes.

Coming in at ~£2 per card in CC, you can see why!

Sure, the 10 for £1 are cheap junk, but it's only a card..

Part of the reason I left was a staff shuffle they were trying, from a new acquisition. What is the obsession with business buying very similar business and keeping the branches so close to each other. What could go wrong
