Just a quick query, in idle thinking about a possible future automotive direction, as I know there's a couple on the boards who own/owned these cars:

What sort of fuel economy do these return in day to day driving?

i get 300 miles out of 1 tank of super unleaded/optimax/tesco 99 ron.

Thats an average of just over 30 mpg I think.

What's the capacity of the tank? Just so I can put it into context against my Cav, which has a 62 litre tank, and gets me about 430ish miles.

On the motorway you can get 40+mpg averge. I just did a trip to London and filled up before I left, averaged 42mpg for the trip :)

An average normal week is about 35-36mpg.

If you don't trash it at all and you don't stop start, I'd say around 40 mpg. However, do the opposite, and you are looking at 20 mpg or even less. It really depends how you drive.

Once I managed to get 250 miles to a tank on a 1.4 RT Clio.

I've got a pal that drives his 172 cup like a piece of male genitalia and gets 30mpg from it. If your a better driver than he is (which wouldnt be particularly hard) then better than that is easily achievable.

I can get 45-50 mpg return from never taking it above 2500 revs.

I can get 20 from stonking it everywhere.

I struggle to get under 20.

You ll never get 50 truely ;)

45 if driven like an old lady yes :)

I just got 24mpg from the first tank in my celica, 300 miles!

that was half motorway and half boosting ;)

172 Cup - Optiplop 97ron

Motorway
(~85mph / ~4,250rpm) -- 32 mpg

City
(Loads of stop/starts) -- 18 mpg

Town
(max 3,000rpm / medium pedal poke) -- 30 mpg

B-Road
(redline / hard pedal poke) -- 23 mpg

For a N/A hothatch it's pretty much what you expect, certainly not a wallet buster.

for a small hatch though consumption seems high? It's not much better than my Prelude! There goes another possible future car off the list!

How many miles do you do a year?

FWIW I calculated the difference in fuel between a car that does 30mpg and a diesel that does 40mpg to be £500 over the course of 18000 miles - hardly significant.

Far too many people assume low consumption figures will cost them loads more, without bothering to sit down and work it out.

Maybe it's just me, but a 'thrill-based' car that can deliver +30mpg during 'normal' driving then return around the 20's when getting the treatment is a pretty fair ballance.

Are you arguing with me about my cars consumption?

Its a hot hatch that returns 30+mpg from a long mixed (half spirited half normal) drive.

How many do you know will do that?

Not many :) I know the GTi-6/VTS engine is pretty heavy on fuel in comparison (still not exactly a gas guzzler!), but that's most likely due to it being an old school engine without faffy vvt stuff :) So something that can get 40mpg and keep up with a lot of cars that return a lot less than that, I'm not complaining, and I do about 15-16k a year.

Pity the figures for the new 197 seem to say that they've sacrificed the fuel consumption a bit to get more power out of it, bu tguess we'll see if it's like that in practice.

My 03 172 gave 33-38 mpg combined on optimax. Anything up to 42mpg on the motorway.

I only do around 16,000 miles a year but I feel shame in currently getting an average of 31mpg (thats with spirited driving in a chunky old sports coupe). Maybe I should forget about the fuel economy?

Fox did you do a comparison between a 40mpg petrol, and a 30mpg petrol ?

It's a shame I really like the Clio as it's a proper hot hatch being a smaller car. The Focus, Civic, Astra, Leon etc are all more family type cars.

It certainly sounds like a 172/182 would return a similar economy as your Prelude.

How come that would put you off?
Were you looking at the 172/182 as an opportunity in saving money on petrol?
