Yo

have been pondering over the idea of moving to the greener pastures of 64 bit for the last week or so..

the setup i have been looking at would be a Sempron 64 2800+ as these are the best of the bunch and i have heard good things about there capabilities, the main thing i want to find out is.....is it going to make a lot of difference over my 2500+ which is clocked at 3200+ spec?. The 2800+ can supposedly hit around 2.5ghz+ speed, the only thing that worries me is the old chesnut that is the 256kb cache.

Any help or opinions are more than welcome as you guys are the best to ask :)

also, what mobo gives a damn good overclocking potential to go with the above chip, i have been looking at the MSI KN8 NEO and the Abit NV8

Cheers

Ben

depending on the price of that sempron, i wouldnt bother. You'd be buying into a dead end with regard to that motherboard and cpu being s754, and dont forget the s754 semprons dont have any 64bit instructions and as you said, half the cache.

A much wiser choice would be to find a 2nd had s939 winchester or venice and buy a board such as the asrock s939dual sata2. It'll run your current agp card, it'll run a pci-e card when you upgrade, and you can also buy an expansion card to run the up and comming AMD am2 cpu's and ddr-II 800 ram as well, meaning its future proof for a very long while yet. The best thing is, these boards can be brand new form around £45. One of those and a 2nd had venice and your laughing mate:)

nice one guys, thanks for the replies :)

was only a thought as i have been seeing some impressive results from the 2800+ and 3100+ chips on sites, think it was Xbit labs review site or summin, they got the 3100+ to 2.5ghz and it had more power and was beating 3400+ athlons (not sure which core tho) and p4's across the board

The Asrock mobo does sound cool, will have to find some info on it later

thanks again

Ben

james,
what do you mean by they dont have 64bit instructions???

I just upgraded my rig recently to one of these chips cos i wanted to be ready for 64 bit. I went from a XP2000 at stock, the jump ain't massive i must say, but im still happy.

some semprons dont :) yours will as its quite new i think

erm - i would go with 939 tho, pick up a cheap winnie and a board, it will last you a bit

the semprons arnt as slow as every makes out mate, its just that 754 is going going.... but not quite gone

btw check the 754 venices

ok good...thats why they are called sempron64! dunno what james was talkin about.

I had a long long think about which upgrade to go for , s754 or s939. With a low budget in mind, I saw no point going for S939. upgrading to a 939 machine is almost as dead technology as S754, with the socket M2 coming out, imho, using DDR2.....

so my choice was go for a very cheap upgrade for now and have 64bit support, but then i went from a XP2000 so it is a bigger jump for me.

Might be better off looking at the Athlon 64 3000+ or the 3200+ both of which are currently on offer here at ocuk.

Stock both will be faster than the sempron and will also be faster overclocked. (should hit at least 2.2 on the 3000+ and 2.4 on the 3200+)
