Clocks go up, benchmark goes down?

Had my 7850 running 1200/5600 clocks for a few months now after the original OC and been very pleased with. Was a bit bored last night and fancied seeing if I could squeeze a bit more out of it. Went in for 1250/5600 at first at 1.225V and lasted about 3 seconds into Heaven 3.0 before the inevitable. Fair enough.

So then thought I'll see if I could squeeze some more into the memory. Stepped up to 5800 and then onto 6000 and didn't have any running issues at all. Heaven ran on a loop for a good hour with no problems.

But then I started paying attention to the benchmarks. Earlier on in the evening I had a heaven score of 1431 with out 57fps. Now I was only getting scores of 13** something with 54fps? Eh?

Sure enough I stepped back to 5800 and it improved, and again to 5600 same thing. How does that work? Is that normal?

Worst bench I did was at 1220/5800 I think which was down into the late 40s FPS. So is 1200/56000 just my magic number?

I also noticed that GPU usage was only hitting 96/97%, where's my last few percent? Or could that be CPU bottlenecking preventing it from stretching fully?

Sorry just realised that's a lot of questions :D

Clocking the vram too high can result in loss of performance due to error correction.

GPU usage of 96/97% is pretty good. You lose a bit of performance on the GPU when the scene changes and needs to load on benchmarks.

benchmarks are different compared to games regarding stable clocks

I tend to tail off at 1250/1500mhz on my 7850 in benchmarks, gaming I just keep it at 1050/1375 as I don't wanna mess with voltages

but theres no way on earth id run 1250/1500mhz in any games

you'll find a point where the score will degrade so just back off on the clocks a little

Ok cool thanks guys. Temps are pretty good, rarely goes over 60°.

Think I'll back off to 1200/1400 like it's been running quite happily for months. Probably why I settled there in the first place. All good learning though!

One more question I've been to ask for a while, is Heaven supposed to have big stutters in, even though it's show 50-60 FPS? Like a couple of jerks during each scene?

Pretty sure it did when standard clocks so assumed it was just down to being hardwork for the card, hence it's use as a benchmark. I might have to take a vid and upload as I'm not sure what constitutes a big jerk or a little jerk! :D

I run mine at 1200/1375 for my 24/7 clock. I only go up to 1250/1500 for benching because it is not stable enough to play games on for a long time. To be honest there is only about a 2 fps difference anyway.
