Well. I know I may have made a mistake but eh.

Basically I used DriveImage XML to clone my HDD, right now my C:\ and E:\ drives both have the exact same files. But I can't get the E: drive to boot.

Simple question. Have I wasted the last few hours of my life? Or is there some way for me to change the E: drive to boot?

Whenever I try to boot from the E: drive I get the "reboot and select proper boot device" problem.

Help is appreciated. Also if what I did do was a huge waste of time, could anyone advise me on what software I would need to fully clone a Windows OS from one drive to the other.

EDIT: Oh and I've tried using the uuh Vista CD to use startup repair, didn't even recognize it had Vista installed.

You would need to go into the BIOS and set E:\ as the first boot device.....

Acronis True Image is what you need to clone HDDs, or if you have either a Seagate or Maxtor HDD in your system, use DiscWizard or MaxBlast which are the same and is basically Acronis True Image Home 11, with one or two minor features removed....you could also use the HDD manufacturer's HDD tools to do the clone.

You will also find other cloning programs in the Partition/HDD Backup/Management section.

Well I'm trying to clone a Western Digital 200GB HDD to a 400GB partitioned Samsung 1TB HDD.

I did try and set E:\ as the first boot drive but it still said "reboot and select proper boot device"

I think I may just wipe the disc and try using Acronis. Thanks.

Looks like it didn't copy the boot sector over, or the drive is not marked 'active', so Windows doesn't recognise that it is a boot drive. Funny you don't get the 'ntloader is missing' messgae though.

Thanks for this, I've just cloned an older western digital to a new Seagate and this info was very useful.

Cheers
