Basically, is this possible?

Mate of mine is planning a new build using a HDD with a view to going SSD in future. Will he be able to clone the HDD onto the SSD if it's the same size or smaller?

Cheers

if the volume is smaller on the HDD than the SSD can deal with, then yes its theoretically possible. Although i must add a fresh install would give him a significant boost.

Within the windows 7 install windows sets up and configures settings for the solid state drive. A direct copy of an OS will hold its previous values. I may be wrong however as i am not 100% certain.

I did this by cutting down my HDD install of windows to the right size by removing programs, then cloned onto an SSD. I still feel as though I should reinstall from scratch however.

Did this recently using the latest Acronis. No need to resize the partition beforehand, just had to make sure that the actual amount of data was small enough to fit on the SSD. Pretty painless overall.

i would be interested to know alex did TRIM automatically get enabled and as well fragmenting the drives get switched off?
Yes it enabled TRIM and disabled defrag.

Thats how I did it too.
