I'd like to use an external drive to clone my MacBook's HDD just incase it fails. Doe anyone know of any suitable software to do this? I was thinking of using one of the WD 60gb USB2 Passport 2.5inch drives to copy to.

Thanks

Tis the beauty of mac, select all the files on the HD and copy accross, or just copy the HD icon across to make sure you get all the hidden files ;)

Is there a progrm that will automate it though? and allow incremental style backups, rather than copying the entire HDD everytime? :)

i don't no if theres a Mac version but for windows i do no that there is Syncback which is a fantastic piece of kit, find out if you can get it for mac

Have you got 10.4?

YOu can create a workflow in that case use automator. It can be set to run using iCal IIRC.

So, Search for last week/day/month of modified files ---> copy to Backup HD.

Jobs a good'un :D

The way I'd do it is to create an image of my current HDD and store it on the backup. It's quick and easy and can all be done in the disk utility. :)

Doing regular backups with that method can't be considered 'quick' can it? :D

You could do this with the .Mac backup client.. but due to Apple's really poor licensing you would need to have a .Mac subscription or setup your own fake .Mac server to backup more than 100meg :(

I'm about 80% through setting one up in a VMWare window, I'd be happy to share it if you want to go that way.. although it does seem like insane overkill to backup to a USB drive :)

Beepcake, that's a mad solution :D I'm going for simple!

Completely mad.. I'm doing it partly as an exercise and partly because I think charging 60quid a year for a gig of disk space is highway robbery :)

You could just boot the Tiger install DVD and run Disk Utility. That'll give you a 1-to-1 backup of your drive.
