Closed cockpits now appear 'inevitable' for Formula 1 in future

Safety overload is daft. MotoGP riders get thrown around the track and ride with broken bones sometimes.

These F1 guys are pansies :p

But people are frankly deluded if you think a closed cockpit is more dangerous than open.

I disagree. The chances of a car ending up upside down or catching fire are far greater than the chances of a driver being struck in the head from another car or a flying object.

There is no perfect solution. But the canopy is not the magic fix people think it is.

When was the last time you seen a F1 car upside down and on fire?

I agree, and look at Webber in Valencia when his car flipped. Could so easily have flipped, let's say Canopy down, and set on fire...

It's Catch 22 all the way, I don't think they will have canopies and instead opt for some other way of protecting the driver's head.

It wouldn't be hard to work around the "what if it flips?" issues with a bit of thinking - it could even be something as simple as a canopy that's made of 3 parts or something, so it can 'collapse' if needed... there are more than likely hundreds of possible ways of doing things that would alleviate many of the issues, to blindly assume canopies would definitely cause X, Y and Z issues instead is a bit short sighted I think.

The article made it pretty clear they are not going for a canopy so no idea why people are discussing it :D

Lowe says that an initial focus on canopy protection has now been abandoned, with tests highlighting that a bar/cage type design is much better.

Numbers or crashes to back this up?
How many acciedents and close calls have we seen for both. There is far more on one side than the other.

Can easily deal with the cars being upside down. Fit a srimech :D

Don't make the rookie mistake of using the worlds smallest bottle of C02 and outputting maximum pressure, so you flip 180 and use up all your power, then? :D
