Hi all,

I have a savings account with HSBC which I wish to close, moving the balance into my current account. I've called HSBC and apparently I need to do this in writing to my branch. This is fine, but I really don't know what I need to write in the letter, so if anyone could tell me that would be great. Also does anyone know how approx. long it will take to close the account and move the funds over?

Cheers,

Matt

Dear xxxxx

I wish to close my account.

As for movement of funds you will need to check the T&C you agreed to when you joined with the bank. MAy be faster just to withdraw the money and pay it in yourself.

why dont you just go in and see someone, they will probably do it for you on the spot.

at least thats what i did, and i needed to sort my current account as it was in a bit of a state, took out an isa, an instant access savings account, an overdraft and a credit card!

only took about 30-45 minutes to do all that so transfer of funds and closure of the account should take minutes.

guess it depends on the branch though, some are better than others.

[edit] or, if you dont have time then just transfer the funds using internet banking and write to them to close the account as they have already said to do.

I had an old dormant Lloyds account I wanted to close.

Went to my branch with my Passport but they said that wanst enough id! Had to go back with my Passport, Driving Licence and a recent utilities’ bill to confirm my address.

Account closed and they game me cheque.

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies. Posted the letter first class today so should be at the branch tomorrow morning.

Skiddley - I rang to do that today.. apparently with the type of savings account this is I cant withdraw from it in the first 12 months.. My only option is to close the account to get the funds - Very frustrating!

Atomiser - Unfortunately I'm at work all day so I don't get time to drop into my branch. I might be able to drop in on my way to work tomorrow so I'm going to try and do that as well.

Kumar - thanks for that, I will make sure I take plenty of ID with me if I get a chance to drop into the bank tomorrow.

Kitchester - Who do you work for?

Ta,

Matt

HSBC.

Be aware, the post will arrive at branch tomorrow and will be sent off for processing. We no longer open our own post, unless it's marked for an individual - Manchester DSC Back Office do that for us, so it may take 12 hours longer.
