Closing all bank accounts.

i did remove it the day before they was scheduled to take it.. but they still took it... i know this sounds bizarre.. but i was not a happy bunny.

I know a lot of people in here are probably thinking "Why on earth?!" and a lot of you probably couldnt live without a bank account! but currently i could easily live without it for a while anyway.

DD is taken from you acc/sort code, not from the 16digit number... not sure what happened, but i think you updating details had aboslutely no impact on anything..

i have so many accounts i cannot keep track of it without a massive excel sheet which is encrypted (truecrypt) on my corsair survivor USB.

Apart from a company taking that £50 out of your account, (which, if they werent entitled to should be given back to you anyway) why else do you not want a bank account

hmm i've never experienced a company doing what they did.. i think i'll close and re-open a new account somewhere else.

You will probably affect your ability to get another bank account as they usually base their references on your existing bank account. As much as going off grid appeals I probably wouldn't recommend it. It's always handy to hold onto a credit card if you have one, you never know when you might need it to bail you out of a situation (say you got into trouble abroad) and you can worry about the money later on.

they did... trust me i went on a website i use, i'd paid for my web hosting, and it said my card details had expired so i thought "right ok, update" so i updated, they instantly debited my account, without permission! they called it "Auto Renewal" BS!

Just change your card and then they can't do this, if they still do then they will end up in court and have to pay you a lot more back.

Usually if you'll go on a site to pay and it says sorry it's expired please enter new details it would assume you were willing to pay.

And I agree with the others. Not really any point in getting rid of a bank account. If you do I am sure you will realise how much you needed one!

The idea of not having a bank account is retarded.

From what I can gather, you gave your card details to a website and they charged something to your card. I don't see what reason you had to give them your card details if you didn't want them to take any money from it, but regardless, if it was not money you were due to pay then ask for it back and if they refuse, speak to your bank to have the transaction reversed.

Then, if you don't want anyone else to be able to take money from your account, don't close it or change to a different account. It would work but it's an over the top solution. Just call your bank and tell them you want to cancel all direct debits and standing orders, and you want to cancel your card and get a new one. Then be careful who you give your new card details to.

Informed opinion, he haz it...
I agree with him though, why the hell wouldn't you have one? Especially in today's age of things. Internet purchases are very much common place with a hefty proportion of the public - why would you limit yourself for the sake of a completely free holding service?

You'll damage your credit history

Very true. I've read a few places that closing down accounts is pretty harmful to your credit rating, and that you'd be far better to get back into the black and then just snap the card (setting any overdraft limits to £0 before you do it).

Right so its autorenewal and it is within the contact you signed online with them, so you gave permission. If you don't wish the renewal ask them to refund it.

Having no bank account means very limited creidt records, which can be a problem later if you wish to obtain mortgages etc as they have no records of your history. Can be a worse problem than having a bad history.

Getting paid cash in hand, great for you, you paying any taxes? Hate freeloaders.

Where will you put your money?

What will you do with the money in your current accounts that you have right now? Or do you have like 50p in them so you can just put it in your wallet.
