closing email account

what things do you need to consider when closing an account ?
when i close an email account. does it mean its permanently gone. will someone be able to register the email in the future. or does the email become non existent once i close it?

I would guess it depends on which email provider it is.

When I did it several years ago, Hotmail just deactivated the account and deleted all of the e-mails. I could get it back by logging in and hitting a reactivate button, but others couldn't register the address (I tried). This might have changed so you'll have to try it and find out.
