I run Nextcloud on a low power second hand Dell Wyse 5070 with an external 5tb USB drive. I have a domain pointed to it so that I can access it from any device which has connectivity to the internet.
For example, I can access it from anywhere using https://nextcloud.hades.com (not a real domain name - just an example). I have setup my Android phone to backup all photos and videos automatically to it. The initial learning curve and setup was a little tricky but now it's working it is great and, apart from the cost of electricity - about 5w - it costs me nothing after initial purchase cost. I have as much storage as I want to attach which is 5tb. In the next few weeks when I get my second drive back from someone who borrowed it I will also be backing up the file area. When larger drives become available and economically viable I will move to them. I can access this from anywhere in the world as long as I can connect a device to the internet. It even shows up in Windows file explorer similar to Google Drive, MS Onedrive, etc, so is no harder to access than my C: drive even if I'm in another country. Self hosting is a good learning experience.
