Cloverfield

People think they are milking LOST is because of this etc

Agreed.
I missed out on LOST and a mate gave me the first 18 episodes to watch.
It was that good that in 2 days number 19 would be on its way and I watched all 18 to catch up.
Every episode was a wow factor and me and my eldest would watch it together and quite often we turn to each other with our mouths open.
Series 2 had a lot of wow factor.
Series 3 didn't have very much of that wow factor and the first of the new series didn't either.

Saw this at the weekend, I thought it was supurb TBH, the hand-held cam POV really puts you in the thick of the action, really immersive. It almost feels as if your playing an FPS, but without actually playing it if you see what I mean...

It was a refreshing take on the whole 'giant monster' thing.

Can't wait for the DVD release, it gets a solid 8/10 from me.

I saw this last night.

I still don't really know if I liked it or not. There wasn't much to like/dislike really... it's strange, I've not had this feeling about a film before :\

I saw it last night, better than I expected considering the slagging off.

I noticed someone said the blair witch project was better.... on drugs or what?

Oh and for the record Lost is crap :)

Seems many feel the same, i love the fact it plays like a snapshot of a much bigger picture, you can imagine many other people going through the same things as this disaster takes place, the typical 'heroes' figuring out how to fight this thing in some other part of the city ect.
I like the way there is info about the reason the monster wakes and attacks all over the net, the film makers have left it up to the viewer how involved they want to get in the story which i can see the comparisons to Blair Witch but this goes way beyond that.

I just got back from seeing this with Benjo, and I really enjoyed it. I went in expecting it to be nothing spectacular in the slightest, but came out really feeling like I had Benjo's moneys worth.

The ending was a bit meh. I don't mind having an unfinished ending if it's implemented well. But in this case, it just felt like they ran out of script.

A solid 8/10 for me though, in terms of enjoyment. :)

Watched this last night, thought it was good but didnt have the WOW or fear factor i was hoping for and just wasnt loud enough.....

....and just wasnt loud enough.....

I don't know what cinema you were watching it in, but I found that the sound was just fantastic, infact it's one of the main things that struck me about the film, the audio was supurb :/

Watched it in MK Cineworld, normaly the sound for some movies are really good, I Am Ledgend was VERY loud and i was hoping this would be the same but it just wasnt.

I think someone forgot to turn the knob to 11 :)

Well, I saw this last night and after all the hype I thought it was a big let down. There just wasnt enough there to carry the handy-cam idea off. Which although was a interesting idea, I didnt really think it worked well for a complete film. And it just left me feeling like i hadnt learnt anything or been told anything and had just watched someones section of home movie. Just a nothing film.

People think they are milking LOST is because of this

Shows such as ER, House, The OC, Scrubs, Friends do not have a overall season or entire series arc to follow. LOST does, and when they are not progressing with the story, those episodes are call fillers, these episodes generally don't matter as they don't move the plot along and the characters end up at the end of the episode where they started. In the last 2 seasons there has been a LOT of fillers, it is these kinda of episodes that make people think they are milking it.
No offense, but I don't understand how people didn't grasp pretty quickly that Lost NEVER answers the immediate questions from the preceding episode, it's always catching up on stuff from plot lines before that. It's never going to hold your hand either, you have to be paying attention to what's going on.

I guess that's the similarity with Cloverfield. People dislike it because they're always left guessing, but that's kind of the point. There's no magical Basil Exposition there to mysteriously tell you the exact details of what's going on, but that's a good thing. If you were there, you wouldn't know either, and you wouldn't have time to go on the internet or check the news for long enough to find out.

Still undecided on this, saw it with Zefan (awesome date babe) t'other night and sort of loved it, but it could have been LOADS better.

*SPOILERS*

The handycam is a stroke of genius, its the only way to portray the situation correctly. I think there should have been more character development at the start though. The biggest chunk of the film is Rob trying to save Beth, but you've seen them together for 2 minutes, and dont really give a fudge if she gets saved or not. I also thought it was not nearly scary enough! The situation is pretty nasty, the handycam puts you there nicely so its really not hard to crank up the tension and leave the audience shaking, so why didnt they do it.

If you compare the subway scene in Cloverfield, with the same thing in 28 Weeks Later, the difference is staggering imo. In 28WL i was bricking it, the characters were bricking it and the tension was high. In Cloverfield, they were quite merrily walking through a pitch black subway line, after being attacked by a gian monster, cracking jokes and there was just no tension. Even when the little things turned up it wasnt up to much, you get a good easy shot of them, theres no jumpy bit!?

The ending dragged on a bit, the middle could have been a lot longer and sorry, but how the hell did a 60 storey monster 'sneak up' on the chap at the end?

That'll do for a mini rant for now.

^^
Isnt there a hint in the film that Rob and Beth have "been like best friends forever" before they dated, tbh if one of my friends called me up in situation like that boy or girl id want to see if i could help them.

Yeah, it is mentioned that hes loved her since college i think, something like that. But its not really drilled into us, if we actually saw some of their day out i think it would have helped tremendously!

Yea true, you get the gist of what they were trying to do but as you said they could have reinforced the relationships a bit more.
