Cloverfield

HIDDEN INFO FOR PEOPLE THAT HAVE SEEN THE FILM:

I got told this today by one of Benjo's friends at college. I apologise if it's been posted already.

At the end, when it cuts to Beth and Rob (?) saying that they had a good day, if you look in the background, something crashes into the ocean. And apparently it was a Japanese satellite made by the company that Rob was going to work for. There was a chemical in it or something that made that beast angry and that's what made it decide to come up out of the ocean. Then obviously there's DEADDAEDTONSTI etc.

Just in case some of you didn't know. :)

I aqquired film again just to find this bit and couldnt see it leading me to believe its a fail.

I just got back from seeing this. FREAKING AWESOME!
I was gripped all the way through it and still tense after.
Amazing experience, it was like you was there with them. Captured emotions brilliantly.
Just imagine if they did it in 3D

I think all their efforts for portraying a 'realistic' handycam effect would be out the window for a start :p
Lol I mean if was in 3D from the actual view of someone instead of handy cam view.

I've just been reading up on some of the viral marketing and all the stuff it doesn't tell you in the film. They have done some good stuff out of the film for this.

Spoilers ahoy...

Just got back, thought it was a mixed bag. Started of far too slowly, disgusting amount of product placement, but once it got going it was very enjoyable.

Subway tunnel bit was excellent, saw what was coming the moment that nightvision came on - however did they have to make the creatures sound like an irate Donald Duck? I actually fell off my seat laughing (well that and the bit where he's trying to get something in her mouth in the snippet vid they taped over).

However, it didn't detract too much away from the fact it's a skilfully played out film that gave just enough information to the viewer - but they don't need a sequel or a franchise IMO.

the reason you think the monster or creature is different sizes is because theres more than one JJ.Abrams announced that the one that came out the sea was woken from the satellite dropped by the Slusho company, and it was only the baby.

There will be quite a few running around.

This is very misleading. What he compared the monster to was a baby without its mother in thats its scared and thus crashes around the city in an angry tantrum sort of way (IIRC he actually compares it to a baby elephant who, if they lose their mother, go wild). He never stated there was more then one monster in the film at all.

Its interesting reading some peoples comments in this thread. It seems people go into the cinema expecting a hollywood film in every sense of the word. When in fact the film is a good portrayal of what would really happen if a giant creature attacked us. People arguing that theres no explanation, in reality we wouldn't gain an explanation in the time frame the film takes place in. We're used to monster flicks giving us explanations via the traditional scientist who the characters just happen to come across when in reality we would never see such people. Although saying all this there is a basic explanation of the creatures origins out there in some of the links that have previously been posted.

That part where the name of the film comes up and it says that, is Ozzy Osbourne from Black Sabbath on the song "Iron Man", as is the music when he first appears as iron man. Get it right lads :D

Saw it last night with the boyf, didn't really feel it was good or bad really :(

SPOILER

Thought they were damn stupid going back for the girl though

Tbh I'm more excited about the possible spins offs discussed in this thread than the film itself :(

I KNEW THERE WOULD BE SOMETHING AFTER THE CREDITS!!! MEH!!! I made the boyf go back in, but the proper credits were rolling... should have stayed! Bah!

Glad I went on Orange weds though... still cost us £8.50 though!!!

I went to see this last night, and while the hand-held camera was a bit tedious at times, I thought the atmosphere of the film was well set, I can see why so many people don't like it though, the ending for me was the best bit. I loved how silent it was in the cinema, I loved how the ending was so abrupt and how it wasn't explained.

Totally agree with you RandomTom - the abruptness of the ending was what made it for me, because I hate films that need everything to be perfectly wrapped up for you, sometimes it just doesn't go right or you don't find out what happens!

Slusho is a fictional Japanese soft drink company which makes the Slusho! icee drink. The secret ingredient in Slusho is something called Seabed's Nectar. This ingredient was discovered on the deep ocean floor, under amazing pressure and in the most extreme cold.

Interestingly enough, this is the company that Rob is going to work for as Vice-President when he goes to Japan. You might not have noticed it, but during Rob's farewell party, Jason was actually wearing a Slusho t-shirt. (See picture above.)

Tagruato is a fictional Japanese oil drilling company. It is also the parent company of Slusho. A press release on Tagruato's website mentions that a debris have fallen off of the Japanese Government 'ChimpanzIII' satellite. Tagruato's scientists and engineers are assisting to track and recover the fragment. According to data, the satellite piece disappeared into the Atlantic Ocean.

This ties in to what was shown at the end of the movie. When the film cuts back to the footage of Rob and Beth in Coney Island at the end of the movie, the camera pans over towards the ocean. On the right hand side of the screen, it looks like something fell into the water and made a splash. That was the satellite debris! (See picture above.)

Apparently, the monster was buried in the mid-Atlantic ridge millions of years ago. While searching for the satellite, they woke up the monster.

Now going back to Slusho, the ingredient (ie. the nectar) which makes Slusho has signs of steroid drug-like effects, hence explaining how the monster came to be. And also recall how Marlena was bleeding profusely from the bites and she finally exploded.

T.I.D.O Wave is a environmental activist organization which is fighting against Tagruato because they claim Tagruato’s research and practices are destroying the oceans. One of the comments posted on the website mentions that Tagruato has found something during one of their deep-sea drilling experiments. "Something that nobody wants people to ever know about, and something that if people were to find out about it, they most definitely would NOT be happy."

Chuai station, which lies in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean (very near to New York), is believed to 'harbor a dark secret' implying that Tagruato is already aware of the existence of the monster and that the station was built for some purpose related to it. When Chouai station was destroyed and sank, Tagruato suspected that it was sabotaged by Tidowave.

I really didn't like it. The monster is brilliantly done, and pretty damn scary, but the rest of the film I couldn't help laughing at.

All the time through the film I kept saying 'why is this person still filming this?'. He films the most pointless crap throughout the film which really grated on me. The other bad stuff was the dialog. There was ridiculous overuse of 'dude' 'bro' and 'man' and the general talking they have was weak.

All that, coupled with an incredibly dumb love story just ruined the film for me.

There's bound to me a sequel, and I'll be interested to see where they go with it. I hope more 'monster kills/smashes/destroys' stuff than 'boy stupidly chases after girl he loves'.
