Excuse the hairy legs in the videos :p

It almost sounds like something needs lubricating? This occurs both with the engine off and on whilst in any gear. It's definitely more noticeable when first starting the car and at low speeds, it's barely noticeable (if at all) when driving, this may be down to road noises. You can feel very light vibration / feedback in the pedal when it's making the noise. The clutch doesn't slip but it does sometimes feel like the biting point changes day to day?! I suspect the clutch / a component of the clutch is on the way out, any thoughts?

I have owned the car since 58k miles and have no evidence of the clutch being changed before.

Clutch issues are normally the biting point being right at the top of the travel or as my old 306 had, unable to get the car into 1st gear while the engine is running!

All I could hear was a plastic knocking noise, almost like the pedal was hitting something, or the pedal spring was moving about

To me it sounds like the lever for the clutch and not the clutch, exactly, itself.

Either it's at the pivot point, which can be sorted with a bit of grease if you can access it(or wd40 if you temporarily want to try it) or it's where the clutch lever is moving on the clutch throw out bearing - both you'll feel through the pedal. The later is not treatable as you don't want lubricants near a friction material(clutch).

Unless the clutch bite point is at the top of the pedal travel, even on self adjusting clutch cables the bite point does move higher very near the end of the clutches life, which would point to the clutch near the end of it's life.

So, if the clutch is working well then I would say just live with it.

Well the issues continue, my engine cut out this evening towards the end of my 13 mile commute. The engine was up to temperature and I was near the end of my 13 mile commute. At first I thought I stalled the car but the electrics were still going, no lights or warnings appeared. I restarted the car and carried on the journey home. I've tested the car whilst stationary at home and it sometimes cuts out when revving the engine, I managed to get a video:

The slight increase in revs at 15 seconds was not caused by me. The car had been idling for 5-7 minutes before fine without me using the accelerator.

Went to drive to work this morning and the car engine cuts out pretty much straight away now. As soon as the engine starts it just cuts out again as per thmy video above. Any thoughts? I’ll be calling recovery when I’m back from work

Have you not got a local garage you trust to give it a good looking over for you as it’s obviously something that needs resolving.
Other than that save yourself the grief and trade it in towards something that is not a Peugeot :p

idle speed valve possibly if it is revving and cutting out etc. but could also be a lot of other stuff. sounds like needs a diagnostic and if all else fails as per Dav4 suggestions above get something not Peugeot lol

Greenflag are due to arrive any minute to diagnose and/or tow to a garage. The only place near me I can semi trust is Peugeot Chiswick! I'm not holding their diagnostics high, if they can than great but I just need it towing to a garage.

The car has proven reliable in my ownership and at 11/12 years old it's not unreasonable to expect something fail, I know it's history quite well and I'm not keen on getting rid especially with house purchase looming!

Greenflag have been and gone. The technician turned the engine on and it cut out almost immediately on first attempt but when he restarted it and used the accelerator the car stayed on and idled. His fault code reader did not return any codes. He did say that the cooling fan came on straight away, which was unusual considering the engine and car were cold. I mentioned the coolant temperature sensor and coolant were changed in September 2018 due to failure of the old one. I bought the part new on eBay.

As the car started and idled he suggested trying to drive it with him following to my garage of choice. It managed the 2-3 miles journey to the garage without any issues, although it did feel a bit lethargic compared to normal.

Sounds like a sensor as they can do funny things. Might be worth replacing the lambda sensor on the exhaust and even the cam position sensor too.

Is there no engine lights on? Could be the MAF sensor, could be the idle control valve, could be fuel pump issue.
