Looking at a new car. It's a '53 plate Renault Laguna Diamonique. It's had one owner from new with a FSH and only done 47,000 miles and looks to be a very tidy car.

Now yesterday i took it for a test drive and all was well apart from what i thought was a very high clutch pedal. The biting point was almost at the end of the pedal and if i lifted my foot any higher i'd have been off the pedal completely.

The salesman was adamant there was nothing wrong with it (as he would be) and said it's probably because i wasn't used to the car..

My question to you all is this: is a high clurch pedal a sign the clutch is on its way out or are they just high on Renault Lagunas?

Yes it's on it's way out. My brothers Laguna is the exact same, any higher and you're literally not touching the pedal - the biting point shouldn't be that high (other Lagunas that I've drove in work prove this).

Though I wouldn't expect it would need replacing after 47k miles - previous owner must have burnt it out like mad. BUUUUUUT it is a Laguna at the end of the day - there's always going to be something wrong with them.

I wouldn't have expected it to go at 47k either...

Not sure what to do. The salesman is adamant that its fine, he even said he would give me in writing a guarantee that if it goes in 6 months they will fix it for free. He also said he would take it to a garage of my choice to get a second opinion..

The way we have left it is that he is taking it to a garage tomorrow. He said if it needs replacing he will do it, if not, then i have the guarantee of 6 months on it..

the guarantee won't be worth the paper its written on, mk2 laguna is pants find something else or at least a better one.

I'd at leas try to get the facelifted one from '05/55 onwards I think it was.

My uncle has an early one and it's been nothing but trouble but my dad has newer one which has been pretty faultless other than consumables. The interior seems to be put together better certainly, but it's still fairly cheap.

They love to eat through the rear bushes that the beam pivots on so check for knocking a the rear. My dads had his done already on 40k but 4years old...

Lucky escape.

Buy something else - not a Laguna. The Laguna II is hopelessly unreliable and a complete and utter pain. Buying a used one is asking for trouble. Buy something more reliable, like perhaps a V12 S Class Merc.

They are quite high normally, but not too high.

They aren't hugely reliable, but if you can get a good one they are good value for money.

Bloke at work has one, has spent a small fortune on it keeping it running.
That's OK if it's something exotic or interesting, but unforgivable on something so run of the mill.

Buy something else, my money would go to a Mk3 Mondeo or sorts.

Even you've been burnt by how godforsakenly **** they are Maz :p

I try not to stock French stuff coz they're all **** but people keep bloody putting them in part ex.

Got 2 Lagunas here, one's an 04 63k miles and seems to be a good un, got another 51 plate 85k miles came in part ex couple of weeks ago and won't pass an MOT due to emissions!

I had to replace a Throttle Body on one last year which wasn't a cheap job.

OP: Do yourself a favour and avoid these POS's and buy a Mondeo.
