Clutch Question

Thanks for all the replies.

So bottom line, unless your car won't start without it pressed, there is no real advantage of doing it...

Not really.

But some people do, and some people don't leave their cars in gear. If you get into the habit of starting the car with your foot on the clutch, you'll never be caught out.

I do as an extra safety measure - but it also seems like my clapped out old engine starts more easily with the clutch down.

I do it for two reasons:

1. After living near the top of a hill for quite a few years I've got into the habit of leaving my car in gear in case the handbrake fails. Having my old 106 smashed up by a neighbours Passat rolling down the hill into it only helped to reinforce my habit :)

2. I worked at a Hyundai dealership and you couldn't start their cars without depressing the clutch pedal.

same here, my old F reg Polo seemed to start better..

saying that, if the engine was warm, you could turn off, leave it in first, and just turn the key and it would always start (and start moving), no pressing of pedals at all :p

Car i have at the moment wont start without the clutch depressed.

Same my Mini is a push button start, you have to press the clutch to start it.

Same for new mini's too.

I also seem to press the clutch in out of habit. just part of the routine, key in, clutch down, belt on, engine start, in gear and awaaaaaaaaaaaay. all in one fluid motion like a secret agent...
