clutch snapped and stranded, no breakdown...best option?

to change down, pull into neutral, then push lever towards the gear and gradually increase revs till you reach correct revs for the gear, the lever will slide into place.

no you dont gradually increase revs you give the car one good rev and then apply pressure and then it will slide in

but dont force it in otherwise you will damage the car

His best choice this morning was to get a cab to the nearest rover dealer and buy a new clutch cable. According to my rave cd its only clipped on and should be easy to get to without jacking the car.

However rover parts desks close at 1pm on a saturday, so it looks like a nice 300 mile clutchless drive.

It's Sunday ;).

I'm sure I only paid £100 to join the AA at the roadside. It was a while ago though so the price might have gone up. I wouldn't try driving it without the clutch personally but hey, you only live once and it could be kinda fun!

Halfrauds open on Sundays, if he's near one he might be able to a cable from them. He might even be able to get someone like ATS or Kwik Fit to fit it.

If they have one in stock, and he can explain to the oik behind the counter what a clunch cable is.

This clutchless driving thing is fine, but for a 300 mile journey I don't think it's wise. He could easily get into an accident trying to concentrate on getting the gears right, and each time he comes to a stop and then has to start the car in gear again - lets face it, it's going to happen a lot across 300 miles, it's bound to do a bit of harm to the engine and gearbox surely?

I think he did the right thing getting the AA.

even worse, it's a he :( and he's only had the car 2 weeks :(

Tom.
with any new car you should have breakdown cover , as you never know how reliable the car is going to be, untill you have had it a while and even then its agood idea to have it.
its not that much for a years cover anyway and its peace of mind.
he has learned the hard way

There isn't a motorway anywhere near Norwich, most his route would be not too great single carriageway A roads with a fair bit of stopping and starting at roundabouts etc.

I'd say trying to go that far without a clutch could be pretty unsafe. If you're at the front of a queue trying to pull out onto a busy roundabout or something and stall it having lurched forward a few feet you'll probably have cars smacking into you from the side as well as the rear.

aye, he's had it temp fixed by the aa now, sure he'll post when he gets home. £105 inc membership, but i dont understand how you temp fix a snapped cable :S surely it'd be just as easy to jsut replace the cable?

Tom.

Well that was fun....... only the AA were open at 7 this morning when it decided to go ping when i pressed the clutch down to get reverse... cost me £105 to join and for them to come out and fix it for me.

The guy came and fixed it for me, said he had fitted a temporary cable that should get me home, and it did!

I was at Snetterton racing model cars, but could hear the racing in the background around the full scale track :)

Came back down the A11 and A14 then all the way up the M6, was fairly stop start on the A roads which i wouldnt have fancied without a clutch! M6 was fine though. If i had been closer to home (within maybe 20 miles) and i knew the roads then i would have tried to drive it.

Any idea how much a new clutch cable and fitting will set me back, £25 or so?

Out of the few recovery places i phoned ;) RAC werent open until 10 i think.

out of curiosity where abouts in norwich did it happen?

just yesterday morning me and a mate were out and about near wymondam/hethersett when the radiator hose clip broke and we had to call the AA out :o

i woulnt like to negotiate the A14 between huntingdon and cambridge with a dodgy clutch ;) heck i wouldnt even like it in a car with a working clutch
