Hi all.

I'm having some issues with my pc and was looking for some advice.

I had to remove cmos battery for a couple of days and when I replaced it the computer booted fine but when I shut it off could not restart unless I removed and replaced battery. So over the past couple of weeks I have had the whole thing apart outside of case cleaned everything; tested all hardware everything is good.

The motherbaord is Foxconn 946GZ7MA-8KS2H running CPU intel Q6700 core2 quad.

Running system at the moment with just CPU; one stick of RAM; hard dive; on board graphics; keyboard and mouse.

Now whilst I am good with electrics I am new to the bios (except boot order date and so on) and, cmos and a little confused.

When I took the computer apart there was no jumper on cmos it as always been like this, 6 years. If I put a jumper on it will not boot at all, I just get a long beep. If I take jumper off it will boot.

When it boots I get the message Checksum error bios set to default. The default bios is the earliest version 2006, it previously had a 2007 version. It recognizes and shows the correct CPU and memory. It says F1 to continue DEL to setup. If I press DEL I enter bios, if I change anything and save, it black screens; fans spinning and will not boot unless I turn off PSU. I then have to remove and replace CMOS battery to get it to boot again. If I press F1 will boot from hard drive into windows XP but does not run well, eventually freezes and I have to turn off using PSU and start the whole process again.

So whilst I was thinking hardware could it be the bios? Bios set to 2006 default and my CPU was not made until 2007, I take it bios will not support CPU? So thinking I should flash bios with latest 2008 version which does support my CPU.

Never flashed the bios before and going to attempt to do it with floppy so any tips greatly appreciated. I am also a little confused and could do with some help over the following issues:

Why it will not boot with CMOS jumper in either position on pins?

If I flash bios will the bios be saved without a jumper?

The link on foxconn site to "how to make a bootable disk" does not work. Do I just format the floppy disk, copy the 2 files AWDFLASH and 642F1P44.bin to it? Or is there something else I have to do?

Sorry for long post and thanks for reading, if any more info. is needed let me know.
