Read through the CMOY threads but none of them answer my question.

Would I hear any benefit using a CMOY with an Xfi ExtremeGamer and Senn 555's? not that my setup doesn't sound superb already.

All I can see is they are only good with portable music players that dont produce enough volume, but my Xfi makes my ears bleed at 50% volume.

So is it worth getting CMOY as a nice little audio upgrade? or not worth it for computer use?

Amps do provide an upgrade, but it isn't like moving from a pc gaming headset to headphones for example. it just makes the headphones that little bit better. When I first got an amp for my Grados I could not hear much difference at all, but then after a month of using my new amp I switched back to the headphone output of my stereo speaker amp. I was :eek::eek: at how crap it sounded, it was like filling my headphones with Swine flu Aids and burning babies.

Senns benefit well from an amp, and even the 555 should although I haven't tried them with an amp (only went down to the 595). Pop over to www.head-fi.org and look through the headphone amp section. There are plenty of amps out there, some very cheap indeed offing incredible value for money. I can't recommend a specific one as I have built my own amos and am not up on the consumer amps that have been out the last year or 2.

I would say enjoy your setup as is, then consider saving up for an amp if you use your headphones enough and want a nice upgrade :)

Thanks for that -Ad-.

I'll have a look at head-fi and see what they say and in the meantime enjoy my current setup as is (which I already do) :)

ive just bought the caffine ultra from germany , took 12 days from ordering and sounds superb heres a reveiw http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f5/review-penguinamp-caffeine-portable-headphone-amp-w-bass-boost-aka-headstage-lyrix-262751/

goes great with my ultrasones ,the seperation imaging and soundstage are amazing and getting better by the day

moon man that is very nice but too expensive for me to justify it as a nice little pc audio upgrade if all it does is increase volume. What is it like hooked up to your pc, can you hear a nice difference?

however saying that I really like the look of this amp on fleabay. it's the top result if you search for 'portable headphone amplifier - CMoy'

EDIT: link rectified thanks Uriel

the volume thing isnt an issue with the d2 and the ultrasones(goes very loud without an amp) the amp is to drive headphones better i.e to their full potential to give better soundstage seperation texture, well everything
tbh i wouldnt use with my laptop as its got crappy onboard sound but i would use it with a seperate dac maybe
as regards the ebay seller theres a thread on him at headfi in the portable amp section , quite positive comments

Linking to that auction site is against the rules here. I'd do a swift edit (that includes your quote moon man).

Whether or not you'll notice a difference really depends on your headphones. I use a Juice2214 CMOY or a FiiO e5. With my iGrados, I notice a tightness and realism in the bass that isn't there without an amp. With my Goldring NS1000s in passive mode, using an amp makes them sound like a different set of headphones. Amazing difference.
