So what's the deal with CNG (compressed natural gas)? Does anyone know anything about cars that run CNG? What is there to look out for over the petrol versions?

I used to own a dual fuel Mondeo that was Petrol and CNG. Not much to say other than it was cheaper to run, used to fill up at Northampton Bus Depot

:D

Not sure why you'd want this in the UK- AFAIK there is nil infrastructure, & storage tank volume required per unit of energy is significantly greater than LPG or petrol/diesel.

Pretty certain @mjt isn't in the UK.
Quite. Discovered it's €0 tax and €0 registration tax on CNG cars until 2020, and was thinking of getting something bigger as a second car. Network in Belgium isn't great, but there's a station 5 mins from my flat so that'll do..

I take it this is the same as lpg. if so along as the engine suitable and its fitted correctly id go for it. i have had friends who had lpg fitted to a range rover, x5, 550i, s500, r32 and Porsche cayenne 4.2 and none of them have had issues when fitted correctly. the x5 had issues but turned out the installer hadn't set it up correctly and once it was corrected it ran fine. the mpg also increases aslong as the gas itself is cheap although the limited range might be an issue as I know some where only getting 200-250 out of a full tank due to the car having a small lpg tank

Not sure where you would get it from without your own compressor. Iran has 700 years of gas reserves and many cars are CNG. The tanks take up half of the boot and have a small capacity ~25 litres. It is more dangerous that CNG as it is a very high pressure gas, not a liquid.
The stations that sell it are on mains gas and have shed sized compressors at the edge whirring away. Last time I was there, it was 2p a litre.
