Co-op being overlooked in PC games

PC has always bred a more competitive than cooperative gaming scene... but with Left4Dead I imagine that the culture will shift depending on its success, I can't remember any title on the PC in the past that was sold upon a coop centric experience - if the popularity of it is as high as expected then im sure a lot more games of its breed will begin to be announced.

I agree. I wasn't too fussed about this when I heard it was an online game, until I saw just how much it's like a multi-player, single player game, now I've ordered it. Will apparently feature split screen too- I hope that comes to PC as well as Xbox, beacuse it would be fun to have 2 players at the PC and 2 from the interent all cooperating.

i always found co-op a bit nooby

Nothing wrong with that :)
I think it can have a different atmosphere to deathmatch/competitive play, which in some ways feel a bit 'scary'. You can't chat to each other and share strategies/ideas etc. When I went round a mate's house to play Doom2 over serial cable, we spent maybe 2hrs playing deathmatch but then like 8hrs playing co-op.

Gears of War co-op on the xbox was excellent. I played it through loads of times with numerous friends! I got it for the PC when it first came out though and had so many problems with saved games magically dissapearing that I gave up with it! Has it been fixed yet? :P

I played doom as well but with 2 PS1s haha. My mate brought his over and we'd hook up another TV from downstairs. We had a tactic on co-op where i would shoot the enemies from behind while my mate knuckle dusted them from the front.

I've also mentioned past experiences playing Sven Co-op in other HL related threads. That mod was very good but I'm annoyed the developers didn't bring it to source.

that wasnt down to a poorly implemented co-op, it was down to a half ****** port, im fairly sure its been fixed, I dont think a bug like that would have been aloud to stay around for long, it was a fairly epic bug to release with a retail game, how that went through testing lord knows. Reminded me of that WWF game on the N64 that would wipe itself at will(and you couldnt backup the saves)

I didn't mean the PC version had bad co-op, I didnt even get a chance to play co-op on the PC version as I gave up with the single player! It wasn't fixed for ages, I kept my eye on the epic forum for months and people were still having problems, lost interest in the end! Might have another look this weekend though!

heh.
The fact it wiped my saved game didnt bother me, the amount of hours id spent on it and was still failing to see what everyone was ranting and raving about when it came on the xbox.
The combat just wasnt fun.

This.

Allows you to play HL2 and its chapters in co-op. Class act.

Has anyone actually tried this? Me and my friend have tried it over the net and on a LAN and as awesome as the idea is, found it doesnt really work hugely well :(

the ammount of time spent waitin for the other person to load up the next part of the level starts to take a pee when you have to load maybe 3-4 parts during a level, it always crashes the client-side when we load the level with that see-saw (physics engine bit) in and quite often one of us would get stuck inside an object in the level it self and have to wait till the other person has reached the next check point.

also the wierd space + ctrl to jump ontop of some of the bigger objects just annoyed me lol

I would love to see more coop in PC games as I find I love these kinda games more than full on multiplayer now days

The co-op is what makes the Lego games go from great to awesome in my books. Completed both the Star Wars one's on PC with a mate (using PS2 pads obviously!) and currently working through Lego Indiana Jones with another mate this week on the 360. :D

And when that's done its time for Batman. The co-op on them is just done so well, with one player having to cover another one while they build a bridge or something, or one player using their special ability to get to somewhere the other can't and then helping them to get their by some other means etc..

I occasionally enjoy RTS games online too for the co-op aspect, i.e. forming an alliance against the computer players and destroying them even if it isn't as challenging as PvP its a lot of fun. :D

So yeah, co-op is awesome. :D

Anyone play Starfleet Command? Played a few of those games with and against my mates. 3 or 4 of you against a huge borg cube was good fun. Wish they'd make an updated game with amazing graphics. I mean you could just focus on the models of the ships considering the background is just black space.

Speaking of games they should bring up to date; how about Mechwarrior?

crysis/crysis warhead would be cool on co op as would far cry 2

ay, one thing I didnt like about crysis was you couldnt throw stones like on far cry though. Granted I never used them on far cry but I did do the odd stealth bit on crysis, that would have been great co-op, one throw a stone while the other maximum strengths behind enemys :p

Why not throw any of the multitude of objects that you can throw then? A chicken? Half a tree? A radio? A table? :p

Kane & Lynch had so much promise but I hear the final game was buggy and played terribly
Did not find that on the PC at all. Gfx were pretty good and the gameplay was similar to Gears Of War. Could not find any bugs either and now its free to play Gold level on Windows Live so you can get all the achievements as well.

Gameplay is like a co-op version of the movie Heat!

Co-op is great. Sven Co-op Half Life mod was fantastic. OF - great. ArmA - great (if buggy) any simulator style game, great. Even comp stomping in something like C&C or Warcfraft was/is great. Let's not forget MMO's and PvE..

What, no-one remembers the Co-Op on Starship troopers? OK it was on LAN and lame with 2 people, but the missions became alive with 3 - blasting through hordes of bugs with a buddy, while 1 defended the engineer repairing the ship or whatever he was mucking around with.... great laff, just lacked a bit in longevity!

Co-Op mod for Crysis needed......
