I don't see it being an issue.

They sell the basic and frankly essential part for cheap and people who can afford to pay for the profit margin do so.

Last time I got glasses many years ago I used glasses direct, got one pair with a bunch of options (anti-glare, 'reactions', thin lenses etc) and the second/'free' pair with nothing, sure they work as a backup but the ones with all the coatings are significantly better all around.

I got some cheap ones from Glasses Direct with no coatings for backup to keep in my vehicles and in comparison to my normal pair they were terrible for driving at night - replaced with anti-glare, etc. (same glasses, same place, just with coating) and they are the same as my normal glasses. Albeit I rarely use them but I like being prepared.
 
This must be a problem for the weak of society.

My incredible eyesight is still perfect after my years on this planet.

This nanny state is the problem and letting the mole-humans amongst us have access to my kinds superior vision powers.

My eyesight is so perfect I haven't needed an eye test in over a decade.

For vari-focal lenses even for the esssential lens part - it's difficult to evaluate the difference between different products , people can share experience of coatings,
but the lens fear is you could get a vari-focal with a narrow central field in focus and poor peripheral vision, and then have to turn head more.

online purchase of these too also presents the problem of having lens vertically positioned for near/far vision head posture - haven't crossed that bridge yet.
