COD4 Lockups

I searched a few pages for an official thread, so please don't shoot me...

Getting rather frustrating now after a couple of weeks, it's fairly random, but usually after 2-3 maps (online) it just hard locks.

Ruled out:

CPU - it does video encoding on all cores for several hours without flinching
GPU - runs furmark torture mode for ages, does go up to 95c but see no bad textures and certainly no crashes
GPU drivers - been through a few revisions, no worse, no better
Onboard sound - had been disabling this for a while (main card is Audigy 2 via old PCI) thinking it was the culprit, but crashed on me tonight with it disabled
PSU - Every other game runs for hours, so increased CPU/GPU wattage can't be bothering it

Basic spec in sig, any other suggestions gratefully received - its a top game but I'm at my wits end now

does it happen in the single player mode?

Try plugging something into you mic socket on your soundcard, worked for me

and remove that old sound card too , thou disabled its best to completly remove it.

had similar problem with my sons pc inn end it was the hard drive brought new drive fine ever since . maybe yours needs defragging or it might not be that just a idea.

Have you checked your event log for anything it's picking up?

had this problem on my sons pc with cod4, it passed all the stability tests and was 100% stable in every thing else. out of frustration i increased the cpu voltage a notch and it hasnt done it since.

Will try the cpu voltage one first I think, can't hurt. Many would say 1.2000 is way too low for an i7 @ 3.5ghz but it passes Linx with flying colours so I never bumped it up.

Possibly COD is straining the gpu more than any other game I have and the cpu's volts are dropping a tiny bit (guessing though, not familiar with how psu rails affect each other, if at all).
