I'm gonna buy a new TV I'm just wondering whether with the 'credit crunch' it's worth holding off for the sales at xmas.

They are already cheap, 40" samsung A656 like mine is now only £630 delivered.

I can honestly say after playing this game for a year and coming across some awesome players I still haven't come across anyone that good yet.
To be that good at the game and stop playing it, wow I know I couldn't.
The trouble is there have been a few sets i've had my eye on

Everytime I go to avforums and start to research the panel it's scary. Every screen seems fine for 3-6 months then the things start falling apart. There was a great post that I'm struggling to find again where a poster said it's criminal how manufacturers are throwing out these TV's every 4-6 months when they haven't even perfected the panels from before.
He listed the issues with all the different manufacturers. Those thin bezel tosh's have been taken off the market they fail so often.
The new sony despite being 100htz is worse than the old one.
Avforums is a wealth of info but it kinda puts you off spending any money

"I'm not sure about anyone else, but I'm absolutely sick to death of TV manufacturers rolling sets off the production line with quite serious problems and taking the "no one will notice" attitude. We're now into 2008 and the top manufacturers are harping on about 24p, 200Hz, 1,000,000:1 contrast ratios etc etc, but why the HELL are they doing this when they can't even get the basics right? Maybe they should concentrate more on improving their current technology rather than panic rushing out the next best technology to out-do the opposition.
This isn't just Sony of course, they're all just as bad as each other. We have Sony with clouding/backlight bleed, Pioneer 8G Kuros had ghosting issues I think it was, LG plasmas have serious image retention issues (which I am having a nightmare trying to get mine changed ongoing for over a month and counting), 2007 Panasonics had snake effect, Samsung LCDs have backlight bleed issues, Samsung plasmas have red sparkles, Philips have input lag and only 1080i support on a full HD resolution set, Sharp has banding issues etc etc. The list goes on, and the one thing these all have in common? The manufacturers refuse to accept this is a problem. There needs to be a regulator introduced to stop this nonsense. They have been getting away with this for far too long now.
I'm in the market for a new TV and I cannot think of a single LCD or Plasma that does what it's supposed to do. They all have issues, and the problem is, most of them appear to be pretty significant. I wish manufacturers would understand that a TV set is one of the most important and expensive purchases a home owner will make. Their ignorance towards the general public and refusal to accept that there is an issue absolutely infuriates me to no end. All they are interested in is rolling out as many sets as they can in the shortest amount of time, adding some features and bogus figures to make it look more attractive in the market,and keeping their big, fat, greedy shareholders happy
If someone knows of a set that doesn't have any serious issues where you can watch SD in decent quality, not worry about screen burn, banding, clouding, input lag, backlight bleed, dot crawl, posphur trails and ghosting please let me know, because that will be my next purchase."

I used to worry about those issues then I finally bought one (40" M86) and simply started playing games, watching TV and films with no real problems and added loads to the enjoyment of them. Im not to concern what some geeks might find with there optical test stuff TBH

Agreed, AV forums is like reading about diseases when you get a slight illness. Makes you paranoid and notice things you never would have bothered even saying let alone thinking about.
My Samsung is awesome for gaming - my primary use.
I couldnt give a crap if the gamut/gamma/ISF/tones etc are wrong (if they are).

Im still tempted by an Iiyama 22" TFT with zero lag, then one day I can own. Ive only done that once on a random Sunday night a long time ago .

I've got the 40W4000 Danny and its amazing
Excellent, let me just take a few snaps and you will see my dilemma. Perhaps some advice from some gamers is better than TV 'experts'.........
Input Lag is a big thing with gaming, both the Samsung (on game mode) and the Sony W4000 are reported to have none.
There is no doubt the Samsung frame looks better though. To be fair though the pictures are meant to be similar as they both are similar as Sony uses Samsung panels I believe. Game mode on the sammys was developed with microsoft for the xbox, however some games look better with it off (GTA is a perfect example of one).
They do a great job of keeping your room warm though. My yamaha amp, TV and xbox turn my room into a sauna

Depends if you want to spend time playing with your Xbox or messing about with calibration curves.

I think game mode looked rancid on mine with component, but with the VGA its great as the softening effect smooths the lack of game mode processing. Set 1920x1080 output and the TV is doing next to nothing, just displaying a raw signal from the Xbox.
Ditto, PC mode on HDMI also does Just scan with zero processing.
Come on Danny you can join in the geeky gaming chat too
