I know I'm a bit late to the party but I've just got COD4 and while the single player doesn't grab me I'm loving the MP, its just I'm rubbish at it :D

I know with any game like this theres no substitute for practice but does anyone have any general tips that might help such as what sensitivity to use, which weapon to start off with, perks to use, links to decent guides etc.?

Any help would be great. Cheers.

I'm crap myself but I've managed to progress to some degree without being a complete embarrasement. My main rules - Don't stay put after taking your shot, keep moving. I Use the M4 with stopping power perk as I'm not particularly good in a close range encounter but at least with this rifle you get a good balance of close range spraying and longer range accuracy. Don't be a lone wolf, stick with your team-mates or at least keep a good idea where they are at all times, shooting alerts the enemy to exactly where you are, so shoot when you absolutely need to. A silencer is a good idea but does mean you have to use open sights.

Practice practice practice - it involves a lot of dying but nothing ventured, nothing gained :)

M4 is a good weapon for rifle little recoil. MP5 and AK74 seem to be the favoured smg's. Cant really comment on the perks its what you prefer really I like using the 3 nades for some nade spammage :D and fast reload. Also if someone runs behind a wall keep spraying the walls are like paper ;)

Dunno if you do this, but in close range combat (lol) don't use the zoom function just aim and fire, I was automatically zooming and getting killed loads! now I can hold my own on most matches! :)

Hope that helps.

Great tips guys, thanks a lot. I've been using the M4 with the laser sight but I tend to miss quite a lot. I've got my sensitivity at medium which makes it a bit easier to aim at long distance but at close range I often find it a bit slow to turn. What sense do most people use or is it entirely personal preference?

Turn sensitivity up to 5, once you get used to it - youll be fine.

Steady aim on SMGs too, firing from the hip will result in a lot more kills than if you try to aim for every shot.

ak47 is a good starter you can spray close up and get lucky bu **** excellent at rang eif you fire in small bursts.

mp5 for anything particularity close such as town maps with lots of buildings, use use the steady aim perk and fire from the hip.

Most important of all, reassign your knife button. its a one hit kill that you find you will use more than you realise once you have a nack for it. I have reassigned mine to F and use summit else as my function button, although some guys i know have it on there mouse.

sensitivity should be low, mouse acceleration needs to be off in windows, and you want a big mouse pad.

Don't bother with any sights. The originals sights are much better on all guns.

i dont play cod4 but as a generic fps tip i always find the easy way to gain an advantage is to learn the maps... knowing where people come from, peoples camping habits, which parts of the map are safe and just generally knowing shortcuts, how to cut people off/come out behind someone is all very useful.

This is consoles ;)

on hardcore G3 is the best gun for open maps, then mp5 for close maps with red dot.I use stopping power, last stand, claymores thats for hardcore maps then for normal tdm or domination i use m16,m4,ak47 with stopping power and martyrdom for domination and tdm i like to use last stand.A tip for planting claymores is don't place the claymore right up against door so its like this
claymore1kr3.jpg

the bottom way i find the best for hardcore because if you place it like the top way they can run into the room and miss the blast, but if you place it so they run it the blast is facing them you can kill em.Also facing it in the doorway looking out sum times will get you kills because when people sneak around the door checking for clays, the dont see its facing them straight in the face and CLICK! too late

oh and smashing the glass on the front driver seat of cars then jumping on the bonnet and dropping a clay onto the front seet so the sensors are facing out of the door, sumtimes will get you a car bomb kill lol

Dont listen to Oneshot he's pap!
I have never seen him get a single last stand kill ever!!!

But seriously.. M16 with red dot is by far the best gun for most game modes when your not very good then as you get better, used to aiming and used to a higher sensitivity then you find out which weapons are good for you. Everyone is different.

Always keep moving as well unless like me you can't shoot for **** whilst moving, in which case run into a corner and surround yourself with claymores then lie down facing the door.

Oneshot, I did not know you used stopping power on HC, do you find it makes much of a difference as most of the time its one shot kill anyway. (I suppose I just answered my own question, Stopping power would turn that most of the time into every time)

i only play hardcore team deathmatch these days, but i nearly always flank the other team. Once you know the maps well, you will know the main places to find enemies.

i just work my way through all the guns going for the headshots - favourites g36c, g3, ak47, ak74, r700

my favourite custom class is:-

FluffyBunnyFeet :p
- G36c with silencer
- whatever pistol with silencer
- claymores (plant in high traffic area's for random free kills)
- uav jammer
- deadly silence

i can rack up loads of kills with that class, works well with any other ar/sub you like (or want to rack up the headshots with). really funny planting a claymore next to an enemy sniper, so it goes off the next time they move :D

g3 with acog is great for longer range for sniping snipers, 1 shot kill on hardcore without any extra power perks.
