All my games I have now are portable, either because they're steam games, or they just work

(ie, i can plug my external hard drive into any pc and just play them)

Can you do this with COD4? I want to buy it, but it costs so much on steam :(

Yeah steam is usually a little more, i bought COD4 on there because i needed it on a sunday.

You could install something that monitors and blocks registry entries, install game then see if it runs.

I would try it for you but have a steam copy myself

*edit* no the stats are a file in the documents and settings directories

where are they saved? reg?

Nopes, in your cod4 folder, but for me it whined '' cod4 stats have been corrupted, your stats have been reset'' when I tried starting my Xp installation of cod4 in vista... Afaik it isn't dependant on what's in the reg.

can you redirect the files using ini or a reg file? or does it have to be in 'documents'

it's gay that they make games reference all over the place now, real gay

I always preferred games that had a profile directory in the program files directory.

Not ideal but you could make a batch file that backed up/copied your profile to the particular directory.
